The One Piece manga started appearing in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, and the anime series followed in 1999. Early anime adaptations often aired weekly, even though they covered multiple manga chapters per episode. To avoid overtaking the manga, studios began creating non-canon ‘filler’ storylines, giving the manga time to get ahead. While series like Naruto and Bleach used a lot of filler, One Piece had less. The studio chose to pace the anime more slowly and include original scenes within the main storyline instead.
While the One Piece anime no longer includes filler arcs, the episodes before the time skip were known for having some excellent ones, and the G-8 Arc is widely considered the best. Even though it wasn’t part of the original story, many fans appreciate how well it captured the spirit of One Piece with a fun adventure immediately following the Straw Hats’ return from Sky Island. It remains one of the most natural and funny arcs in the series, to the point where many viewers feel like it could have been a genuine part of the main storyline.
G-8 Arc Is the Perfect Break Between One Piece’s Sky Island Water 7 Saga

Okay, so after the amazing Skypiea adventure (Episodes 196-206), we jump right into the G-8 Arc! It’s so cool how seamlessly it flows, even though it wasn’t originally in the manga. Honestly, it feels like a perfect breather before things get really intense with the Water 7 Saga – which, trust me, leads to an epic showdown with CP9 and the World Government! Basically, the Straw Hats accidentally end up in super-secure Marine waters and spend the whole arc trying to sneak out without getting caught. It’s a fun, tense ride!
It’s no surprise that things rarely go as planned with this group, and this situation is no different. The Straw Hat Pirates even disguise themselves as Marines to try and get their ship back. However, after Luffy’s growing fame following the events in Alabasta, the Marines recognize him. Luckily, Usopp manages to use speed dials he obtained during their adventure in Skypiea to help them escape. The crew then sets sail for Water 7, where they need to repair the badly damaged Going Merry after their difficult voyage.
