One reason why many fans adore “One Piece” is because its creator, Eiichiro Oda, delves deeply into most characters’ pasts, offering insight that makes them more relatable and complex. These backstories are frequently intense and emotional, while also weaving in elements of the series’ lore. Characters like Kuma, Robin, Sanji, Trafalgar Law, and others have had their backstories revealed over time, making fans grow even fonder of them. However, when it comes to a less popular backstory in the series, many would agree that Zoro’s is the least appealing. Introduced early on in “One Piece,” before the story had fully developed, Zoro is Luffy’s first mate and has always aimed to become the world’s greatest swordsman.
In the East Blue Saga, the background story of Zoro was unveiled, showing us why he’s relentlessly pursuing his dreams since his youth. His ambition started when he decided to venture into the sea, aiming to confront Mihawk, the present world’s most powerful swordsman. Unfortunately, Zoro got lost during his journey and found himself in a difficult situation when Luffy liberated him. As a token of gratitude for freeing him from the Marines, Luffy requested Zoro to join his crew, marking the beginning of their legendary adventure together. Despite criticism over the years about Zoro’s backstory being lackluster, there are indications that renowned author Eiichiro Oda has significant plans in store for the future pirate king’s right hand.
Oda Still Has Time to Explore More About Zoro’s Past
In contrast to most other crew members, Zoro’s backstory is less developed, particularly in terms of emotional depth. However, Kuina’s death remains a puzzling mystery, leading to various theories. Some speculate she took her own life, while others suggest she was killed due to her unique identity. Regardless of the cause, her untimely death is deeply saddening, and the fact that it occurred soon after Zoro and Kuina vowed to compete for the title of the world’s strongest swordsman adds an extra layer of tragedy. There are numerous ways to delve into the circumstances surrounding her tragic end.
Besides this, it’s also worth noting that Zoro isn’t just a direct descendant of Ryuma, a legendary swordsman, but he also hails from a noble Samurai Clan of Wano, which was nearly eradicated when Kaido and Orochi took over the land. His family line is largely extinct, with him being one of the few surviving members of the Shimotsuki family. Koushiro, who is believed to be Kuina’s father and resides in the Shimotsuki Village in East Blue, is another member, as is Toko, the adopted daughter of Yasue.
The narrative merely touched upon his family’s downfall at the hands of pirates and how young Zoro, left as an orphan, journeyed across the New World to join Koushiro in East Blue. Oda leaves open the chance to delve deeper into his past, possibly revealing a tale where Zoro restores the dignity of his once-noble family through his actions. By series’ end, his legend could eclipse that of Ryuma.
Zoro Can Reach the Top, But There’s Still One Person He Can’t Beat
The climb to the pinnacle is far from simple; Zoro’s life has been marked by hardships, falls, and setbacks. Yet, he persevered, often pushing through when things seemed impossible and emerging victorious. From his embarrassing defeat against Mihawk in East Blue to Elbaf, his journey has been captivating, and there’s much more to unfold.
Conquering Mihawk isn’t the sole challenge for Zoro; he must surpass Shanks, Admiral Fujitora, potent swordsmen still thriving in the New World, and a ghostly adversary – Kuina. Despite reaching great heights, he never managed to defeat her, the only one who bested him repeatedly. The weight of their shared dream now rests solely on his shoulders since her untimely demise.
