Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! Alex Kurtzman, who leads the show, has revealed that a key character won’t be returning for season 2 of the sci-fi series.
One major character won’t be returning for season two of the show, even though the first season hinted at a future for them. The finale of Starfleet Academy saw the students successfully defeat Paul Giamatti’s character, Nus Braka, and destroy his mines. Braka is now in custody and will face consequences for his actions.
Kurtzman recently told TV Insider that Paul Giamatti won’t be back as Nus Braka for the second season of Starfleet Academy. Although both the show and Giamatti are interested in a potential return at some point, it won’t happen this season.
Paul won’t be appearing in Season 2, but both we and he are eager to have him return. We’re working on making that happen in Season 3.
Fortunately, it looks like the rest of the cast will be back for the show. Kurtzman confirmed that no other characters from Starfleet Academy will be missing. The main actors are all returning for season 2 to play their roles again.
TV Insider: Will everyone else be back?
Alex Kurtzman: You mean everybody else who’s currently on the show?
TV Insider: Yeah.
Alex Kurtzman: That’s the plan, yeah.
It’s not very surprising that Nus isn’t back for season 2 of Starfleet Academy. With the main villain captured at the end of last season, he can’t cause any more trouble. Plus, the fact that the Academy students were recognized for their work suggests they’ll all continue to play key roles in the new episodes.
While details about the future of Starfleet Academy in season 2 are still limited, Kurtzman and co-showrunner Noga Landau are planning several self-contained episodes that will ultimately connect to the main storyline. They seem to have a lot of exciting content planned, even without the involvement of Nus.
Despite the uncertainty around a third season, Kurtzman’s comments suggest the show isn’t finished with the character of Nus. There are plans for future storylines centered around Starfleet Academy that could potentially bring Nus back into the story. It’s currently unclear how his story will continue after being arrested.
Filming for Starfleet Academy season 2 finished in February, so it’s probably not going to surprise us with a return appearance by Giamatti’s character anytime soon. However, because his character was so important in season 1, it would still make sense for him to reappear later. Maybe season 2 will give the story a chance to develop, setting the stage for his return in a future season.
