One Street Fighter Character’s Return Absolves Almost 29 Years Of Bad Blood

The Street Fighter series has a huge roster of characters, but the original group of ‘World Warriors’ remain the most popular. Street Fighter 6 has done a fantastic job reimagining many fighters, creating what some consider the best versions of these characters yet. With updated moves, expanded backstories, and fresh designs, one recent addition in the downloadable content really shines as the biggest improvement over previous iterations.

With Street Fighter 6, returning characters aren’t just playable—they bring with them almost all of their classic moves from past games. This makes each addition feel like a celebration of their history within Capcom’s fighting game series. While not every character deserves a comeback, those who do are typically popular choices among fans, like Akuma, M. Bison, Elena, and Juri. The newest DLC Character Pass continues this trend, bringing back Sagat, C. Viper, Alex, and Ingrid.

Street Fighter 6 Brings Back Alex As Its Next DLC Character

Alex is the next downloadable character coming to Street Fighter 6 on March 17, 2026. He’s the third character added through Fighter Pass 3, following C. Viper and Sagat. Unlike those two, Alex has a complicated history with Street Fighter – he first appeared in the series’ older arcade games and was often seen as a challenging opponent. While Sagat is a classic boss from the original Street Fighter and C. Viper is a modern, tech-focused fighter from Street Fighter 4, Alex initially frustrated many players.

It’s great to see how much better Alex is in the new SF6 version! He’s now a “heel” – a villainous character designed to get a negative reaction from the audience, and he’s really embracing that role. The gameplay trailer showcased his authentic, close-combat fighting style, thanks to motion capture from professional wrestler Kenny Omega, and fans are already very excited about it.

Alex has received an unusually large amount of fan support, even compared to other downloadable characters. He’s even gotten a custom theme song created by the famous band JAM Project, known for their work on anime like One Punch Man. There’s a lot of excitement around Alex, and it feels like Capcom is using this as a chance to revitalize a character who has had a difficult history with fans.

Past Iterations Of Alex Were Despised By Fans For Many Reasons Since His Debut

I first got into Street Fighter with Street Fighter 3: New Generations in the arcades. It was supposed to be a fresh start for the series, but honestly, it felt weird because they ditched a ton of the characters we all loved from Street Fighter 2 – Ryu, Ken, Dhalsim, the whole crew! This new guy, Alex, was supposed to be the face of the franchise, basically taking over for both Ryu and Ken. It was a big change, that’s for sure.

Fans strongly disliked the initial release of Street Fighter 3, even before Third Strike revitalized the series. Later versions of SF3 brought back popular characters, which quickly made Alex feel unnecessary. While some fan concerns were addressed, Alex never became as popular as characters like Necro and Hugo did in the years that followed.

Alex struggled in the game because he wasn’t as strong as other characters and his fighting style was unpredictable. Many of his attacks didn’t function properly, and these issues were never addressed in any version of Street Fighter 3. Beyond a dislike for the final boss, Gill, Alex lacked a strong backstory or clear purpose, leaving his identity largely up to how players imagined it.

Capcom Seems To Finally Understand What Direction To Take Alex After Almost Three Decades

Before Street Fighter 6, Alex was often remembered for odd animations and unusual gameplay in Street Fighter 5. But his latest appearance shows a much clearer vision for the character. Capcom has given him a stronger personality, both in how he acts and how he fights. Alex now fights like a classic wrestling villain, using powerful grappling moves designed to force opponents to submit and feel defeated.

Alex’s rough voice and angry attitude now seem to come from a deliberate acceptance of his difficult past, almost as if he gains strength from it. This new direction for the character is a major improvement, making him as compelling as other popular Street Fighter characters. With familiar special moves and a new wrestling style, Alex has the potential to become a fan favorite, reaching the same level of popularity as iconic fighters like Ken or Ryu – characters he almost surpassed before.

Alex shares a lot in common with popular Tekken characters like King and Armor King, as he also relies on wrestling moves for exciting and impactful gameplay. If Capcom continues to develop Alex in this way, he could become even more popular with fans and potentially appear in future games.
