One Thunderbolts* Detail Secretly Set Up Avengers: Doomsday So Much More Than We Realized

Last year’s Marvel films primarily focused on setting up future storylines, especially for the next Avengers movie, and Thunderbolts was part of that. The end of Thunderbolts showed two teams competing to be known as the “Avengers,” with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes disagreeing over who should lead them. Even bigger, the scene confirmed the Fantastic Four are officially joining the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, as their spaceship was seen entering Earth’s atmosphere.

The directors of Avengers: Doomsday, the Russo brothers, filmed the scene after the credits ended about a month before Thunderbolts came out. Many people think this scene takes place during the middle of Doomsday, and the dialogue hints at a space-based problem that will likely be introduced early in the film. However, there’s a smaller detail in the Thunderbolts post-credits scene that could be even more important for the overall story of the Multiverse Saga.

The New Avengers’ Watchtower Can Monitor Interdimensional Threats

As a huge Marvel fan, I was totally buzzing after the credits! The scene takes place in the new Avengers Tower – it’s been seriously upgraded with some incredible tech to spot threats. They pick up something entering Earth’s atmosphere, and it turns out to be interdimensional – meaning it’s coming from another reality! Then, the Fantastic Four’s logo appears, confirming they’re finally joining the fun on Earth-616. But honestly, what really got me thinking wasn’t just that they’re coming, but how the Thunderbolts even knew it was an interdimensional threat in the first place! That’s a huge deal and raises so many questions.

This suggests two things. First, Earth-616 has faced more threats from other dimensions than previously known. We used to believe that Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were the only instances of dimensional breaches on Earth-616. However, neither of those events allowed scientists enough time or opportunity to study interdimensional travelers closely enough to immediately detect new threats. It’s probable that Doomsday will begin with a series of dimensional jumps, providing more data for analysis.

What’s really fascinating to me is the idea that we can now tell if someone or something isn’t from our dimension. The comics have always suggested everything vibrates at a slightly different frequency depending on where it’s from, but I never expected to see that play out in the MCU! It’s a clever bit of science for the multiverse, and honestly, I think it could be key to fixing things after Secret Wars. It makes so much sense that they could use this to ‘tune’ reality back to normal.

Which Multiversal Travelers Will Be Encountered Before the Fantastic Four?

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie will likely feature characters and settings from at least three different universes, and potentially a fourth. While the main setting will be Earth-616, and the Fantastic Four’s dimension is almost certain to appear, the most interesting addition is a timeline based on the Fox X-Men films, which will allow characters from those movies to return. This suggests that characters from the X-Men universe will be key to the film’s interdimensional travel, aligning with existing theories about Doomsday.

So far, the Multiverse Saga hasn’t shown many alternate dimensions invading our main Marvel universe (Earth-616). Instead, most stories focus on heroes from Earth-616 traveling to other universes. This is a clever approach, as it lets the movies use our existing knowledge of the characters while still showing off the weirdness of the wider multiverse. For instance, the end of The Marvels showed Monica Rambeau entering a timeline connected to the X-Men. This could be a big problem, as her being there might cause a collision between realities – the same “space problem” hinted at in the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts.

We’re starting to get a clearer picture of what’s going to happen in Avengers: Doomsday. Interestingly, the most helpful hints so far have come from the little scenes after the credits roll. By putting those pieces together, fans have come up with some compelling theories that seem very plausible. It probably won’t be long until the official Doomsday trailer arrives and confirms – or denies – what everyone is guessing.
