As a longtime fan, I was so hyped when Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword! It’s been twenty years since a proper Onimusha game – the last one, Dawn of Dreams, came out in 2006 – and I’ve been hoping for a new adventure ever since. Seeing the previews and demos has been incredible; it looks like a beautifully made action game and I can’t wait to play it!

The game successfully revives the classic Onimusha feel while incorporating modern gameplay elements. It’s been twenty years since a new Onimusha: Way of the Sword game, but a recent demo at Summer Game Fest suggests Capcom has created another successful title. Players are immediately immersed in a unique shrine environment, tasked with investigating the town, recovering stolen spirits, and combating a spreading corruption. The game excels in both story and gameplay, featuring solid combat that enhances the overall immersive atmosphere.

Battles are smooth and strategic, focusing on blocking, dodging, and fast attacks. Landing a powerful combo against the demons invading the town feels amazing, and mastering the timing can create beautifully fluid attack sequences. The game is fast-paced and exciting, but still rewards the careful, precise timing of a samurai delivering a finishing blow.

Even though you become powerful as you play, the game always finds ways to keep you challenged. The demo’s final boss, Rasho-gan, was a perfect example – a terrifying creature built from the limbs of people he’d supposedly ‘saved’ by altering their destinies. The fight was incredibly difficult, and I died many times before learning how to effectively fight back and land my own attacks. The game is simple to pick up, but truly mastering it takes skill, making every successful combo, dodge, and finishing move feel rewarding.

Beyond its fun gameplay, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a beautiful game. The art style is excellent, the monsters are genuinely frightening, and the game world feels alive. The transitions between the real world and the stunning, artificial realms are a visual highlight. With unique characters, easy-to-follow combat, and impressive effects, this is a standout title from Capcom, continuing their strong year in 2026.

Capcom Is Having An All-Time Great Year

Capcom had a successful 2025, with positive responses to both Monster Hunter Wilds and the Onimusha 2 remaster. But 2026 was even better, driven by strong releases like Resident Evil: Requiem and Monster Hunter Stories 3. Street Fighter 6 continues to be popular thanks to ongoing updates and collaborations. Capcom also launched a new hit with Pragmata, demonstrating their ability to create successful, original games. The recently released Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an ambitious new entry in a series that hasn’t seen a major installment in twenty years, though VR versions and remasters have shown continued interest in the franchise.

The recent preview at Summer Game Fest showed Capcom is very capable of successfully bringing back a classic franchise.
