The upcoming video game “Onimusha: Way of the Sword,” which is set to release in 2026, has recently provided more information about its features, as shared in a post on the official PlayStation Blog. In this post, specifics regarding the gameplay mechanics were clarified, such as how light and heavy attacks, as well as defensive techniques like deflection, will operate when the game launches for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in the next year.
The new game’s combat system will lean towards a traditional approach, featuring separate buttons for light and heavy attacks – square and triangle on a PlayStation controller respectively. L1 serves as a defensive button, allowing the player to deflect enemy attacks and deplete their stamina. A combined press of L1 and X offers an additional advantage by knocking the opponent off-balance, while executing an Issen counter is possible if the player perfectly times the parry.
In this write-up, a battle against a character named Sasaki Ganryu, who serves as an adversary to the central figure Musashi, is detailed. Similar to the player’s avatar, Sasaki wields an Oni Gauntlet, granting him the ability to unleash potent attacks after collecting the spirits of vanquished foes. The confrontation appears to be structured to evaluate the player’s own precision in timing for parrying and blocking assaults.
Not long after the release of the latest trailer for “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event earlier this week, we learn more about the game. The trailer highlights the different Genma that players will encounter while playing as Miyamoto Musashi through the story. In addition to typical swordsmen, players will also face larger enemies, such as legendary Yokai like Nue, who can unleash lightning attacks.
In the trailer, we get a glimpse that Musashi isn’t just limited to swords in his arsenal. He demonstrates an ability to engage enemies from afar with a bow, and during close combat, he wields a twinblade staff capable of generating whirlwinds of fire to defeat multiple adversaries simultaneously.
In June, director Satoru Nihei announced that the game Onimusha: Way of the Sword will not have an open world design. Instead, it will offer a more straightforward storyline with a linear progression. Furthermore, Nihei clarified that this game won’t be excessively challenging or require repeated attempts for players to advance. The team aimed to make the game enjoyable for a wide range of players, even those who may not be highly skilled at action games.
Nihei clarified that Onimusha: Way of The Sword isn’t a game set in an open world and it doesn’t follow the tough-as-nails, try-again approach often seen in Soulslike games. Although experienced action gamers will still find enjoyment in it, the game is designed to be engaging for players who may not typically gravitate towards action games. The core of Onimusha: Way of The Sword lies in showcasing the impact of sword clashes through the gameplay.
The “Onimusha” series, which had last seen a release in 2006 with “Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams”, has made a comeback recently.
