Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Finale Explained

This story contains spoilers from season five of Only Murders in the Building.

The door has finally shut on the mystery of who killed Lester the Doorman.

The fifth season of Only Murders in the Building ended with a surprising reveal on October 27th: Mayor Beau Tillman (played by Keegan-Michael Key) was responsible for the death of Lester Coluca, the Arconia doorman who was found dead at the beginning of the season.

Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) pieced together the strange series of events leading to Lester’s death in the fountain. It started when Nicky (Bobby Cannavale) discovered Beau was having an affair with his wife, Sofia (Téa Leoni). In a fit of rage, Beau cut off his own finger, which ultimately led to the discovery of that severed digit in Oliver’s apartment last season.

In the ninth episode, it was revealed that Lester killed Nicky to protect the Arconia building from criminals. However, this made him a target for Beau, who wanted both his finger back and to stop Camila White (Renée Zellweger), Sebastian “Bash” Steed (Christoph Waltz), and Jay Pflug (Logan Lerman)—a new group of mobsters—from moving forward with their casino plans.

Finally, Beau pushed Lester into a fountain, and he tragically hit his head, resulting in his death. The doorman tried to tell Mabel, Oliver, and Charles what happened, but his phone’s autocorrect messed up the message, preventing them from getting the correct information.

When Beau’s secrets were uncovered, he tried to stop his friends from sharing them by trapping them in a hidden room inside the Arconia, which was scheduled to be demolished. They managed to escape and expose his secrets, leading to his arrest and, for the time being, preventing the building’s destruction.

Like all mysteries at the Arconia, this one also ended with a murder. The episode concluded with Mabel, Oliver, and Charles taking a break from the current chaos to listen to Cinda Canning’s podcast from season one. They became engrossed in the story of a red-haired woman from the U.K. who was wrongly accused of killing a member of the royal family.

It turned out the woman Cinda (Tina Fey) had been describing was actually herself. She was discovered wandering the streets, injured. The well-known podcaster was ultimately found dead just outside the Arconia building, putting Mabel, Oliver, and Charles in a position to investigate.

Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, the ending of Only Murders in the Building and the uncertain future of the Arconia building have viewers speculating about a sixth season – and whether the next mystery might take the main characters to Europe.

In September, Short told TopMob News that the show will continue as long as they can maintain the current level of quality. He said, “As long as we feel that the quality is what it is presently, I think we’ll always wanna do it.”
