Following the debut of her character, Varang, in Avatar: Fire and Ash, Oona Chaplin has shared what she hopes to explore with her role and the world of Pandora in Avatar 4.
Varang is the fierce leader of the Mangkwan clan, often called the Ash People. Unlike other Na’vi clans, she and her followers don’t believe in the goddess Eywa and are enemies of Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family. Her character has a surprising relationship with Miles Quaritch, despite him being human, and this has made her incredibly popular with fans. Varang is known for being charismatic, brave, and unpredictable.
During a conversation with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant about the home release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, actress Oona Chaplin shared what she’d like to see explored with her character, Varang, in future installments. She’s particularly interested in delving deeper into the complicated romance between Varang and Quaritch – a relationship that’s both twisted and genuinely loving – and even suggested the possibility of Varang becoming pregnant and the consequences that would have. Regarding the world of Pandora, Chaplin expressed her fascination with the Tulkun and how their decision to abandon their peaceful ways and go to war might affect them. You can find her full comments below.
I’m really curious about what happened with the Tulkun after the war, for both Varang and the rest of Pandora. They broke with a long history of peace by fighting, and we didn’t see how they were doing afterward. I’d love to know how they’re coping with such a terrible battle. As for Varang, I find her fascinating to play because she’s so different from me. I’m eager to explore her character further, especially the complicated side of love. Even though her relationship with Quaritch is messed up, I believe she genuinely cares for him, and I want to see where that leads. He brings a strategic, military mindset that she’s never encountered before, as she’s always reacted in a more instinctive, fight-or-flight way.
Now that she’s been introduced to strategic thinking, it really opens up possibilities. It makes you wonder what she’ll come up with next, and how it might affect her life – even big things like starting a family. Let’s see what happens.
Wow, the ending of Avatar: The Way of Water was intense! Varang and Quaritch, along with the RDA, finally lost to the Na’vi and the Tulkun. We definitely see Varang survive, but Quaritch’s fate is… complicated. He seemed to sacrifice himself, falling into the ocean depths after teaming up with Jake to rescue Spider. It’s left pretty unclear if he’s actually gone, but honestly, with two more Avatar movies planned, I’m expecting him to be back. Their relationship is just too interesting to leave hanging!
Jake, Neytiri, and their allies have temporarily reclaimed Pandora, but Earth’s worsening problems mean humans will likely try to conquer it again. When they do, Varang will face a difficult choice: will she side with the humans as she did before, or will she try a new approach? Her time with Quaritch has made her a more strategic thinker, making her a key unpredictable player in future Avatar films.
The planned release dates for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively. However, producer Rae Sanchini has stated that these dates are not yet final. While the scripts are complete, the production team is still working out the details of the schedule and budget for the next two films.
Considering the thirteen-year gap between the first two Avatar films and the recent delay of Avatar: Fire and Ash to 2025, fans are used to waiting. However, it now seems likely that audiences won’t find out what happens next with Varang, Quaritch, the Tulkun, Jake Sully, Neytiri, their children, and the world of Pandora in Avatar 4 for more than three years.
