OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist departs AI firm

As a researcher with a background in artificial intelligence and experience following the industry’s latest developments, I find Ilya Sutskever’s departure from OpenAI intriguing. After nearly a decade with the company, Sutskever, who played a significant role in pushing out former CEO Sam Altman last year, has decided to leave without providing an explanation. His statement of confidence in OpenAI’s ability to create safe and beneficial AGI is reassuring but leaves room for speculation about his reasons for leaving.

Ilya Sutskever, a founding member and current chief scientist at OpenAI who temporarily stepped down as CEO Sam Altman last year, has announced his departure from the artificial intelligence company.

As an analyst, I’ve reached a point after nearly a decade with OpenAI where I’ve chosen to part ways, sharing this news in a May 14 X post without going into detail about the reasons behind my departure. I remain optimistic that OpenAI will succeed in creating an artificial general intelligence (AGI) that is both safe and beneficial for humanity.

According to Altman’s post on X, Sutskever and OpenAI are set to end their professional relationship. Meanwhile, Sutskever intends to focus on a personally significant project.

OpenAI named Jakub Pachocki as their newest chief scientific officer. Since 2017, he’s served as the organization’s research director and spearheaded the creation of their advanced language model, GPT-4.

Last November, there was a brief tenure change at OpenAI’s helm when Sutskever was involved in an initiative leading to the temporary replacement of Altman as CEO. However, this move faced strong opposition from the company’s workforce, ultimately resulting in Altman being reinstated to his former position.

In a post on X last November, Sutskever expressed his heartfelt apologies for being involved in the board’s decision-making.

Sutskever also co-founded OpenAI Global, LLC, the firm’s for-profit arm.
