As a researcher with a keen interest in artificial intelligence and consumer electronics, I am thrilled to see Caitlin Kalinowski, a seasoned veteran in the virtual reality and metaverse spaces, joining OpenAI. Her decade-long experience working on cutting-edge projects at Meta and Apple has undeniably shaped her into a formidable force in the tech industry.
Previously at Meta, Caitlin Kalinowski led the augmented reality hardware team, but now she is taking charge of a new consumer hardware team specializing in artificial intelligence at the company OpenAI.
As reported by TechCrunch, Kalinowski currently serves as the principal engineer for Meta’s newly unveiled “Orion” augmented reality spectacles. Previously, she gained experience as a designer and engineer at Apple. Over the last ten years, her professional focus has been on the development of virtual reality and metaverse technologies.
Instead of focusing on Meta’s Orion augmented reality glasses, which were a part of her previous company’s plans for the metaverse, her new role at OpenAI seems to be geared more towards developing consumer robotics technology.
On X.com, Kalinowski expressed her excitement about becoming part of OpenAI where she will oversee robotics and consumer hardware initiatives. While specifics regarding her position are yet to be disclosed, it’s evident that this move marks a new direction for the company as they delve into the hardware industry for the first time.
“In my new role, I will initially focus on OpenAI’s robotics work and partnerships to help bring AI into the physical world and unlock its benefits for humanity.”
AI hardware
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technology took off significantly following OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT in 2023. Although many companies specializing in the creation of AI hardware, like Nvidia and TSMC, have skyrocketed in the tech industry, the consumer market for AI-focused hardware and devices has yet to witness its anticipated “iPhone-like breakthrough.
Earlier efforts at integrating AI into the physical world, like Humane’s AI “pin” and smart speakers from companies such as Google and Amazon, have garnered different levels of consumer interest. However, hardware equipped with sophisticated AI systems such as ChatGPT by OpenAI has yet to achieve widespread popularity among the general public.
Instead of creating their own hardware and manufacturing it in-house, the company’s newly established consumer hardware division might choose to accelerate the process by acquiring certain technologies from major tech companies through licensing agreements. This strategy would capitalize on the company’s AI models and the expertise of its new hardware lead, who has experience collaborating with big players like Meta and Apple in large-scale hardware production.
