Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI has rapidly advanced the field of generative AI, aiming to create artificial general intelligence – AI with human-level capabilities.
The AI company has faced challenges such as limited computing power, copyright-related legal issues, and demands from investors to become a profitable business.
The company isn’t focusing solely on artificial intelligence. Over the past year, they’ve hinted at plans to also start creating their own physical products, or hardware.
Jony Ive, who used to be Apple’s chief designer, now works at OpenAI, heading up their design team and potentially helping to create a groundbreaking new device – one that could be as impactful as the original iPhone was in 2007. OpenAI also bought Ive’s AI startup, io, for $6.5 billion.
Both OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Google’s Sundar Pichai agree that current computer technology isn’t well-suited for the demands of artificial intelligence. They believe achieving advanced AI, like artificial general intelligence (AGI), will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, with the hardware we have now.
Previously, Altman suggested that the advancements in AI wouldn’t need new computer hardware. He also pointed out that even if new devices *were* necessary, people would likely be pleased to upgrade anyway.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently hinted at the company’s future hardware plans. He shared some insights during a speech at the Welt AI Summit in Berlin, suggesting they are exploring new possibilities in this area.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen truly groundbreaking changes in how we interact with computers. The introduction of the mouse, keyboard, and the visual windowed system on monitors was a major leap forward, but since then, there haven’t been many similar revolutions.
Sam Altman points out that while technology, including touchscreens, has become more sophisticated, we haven’t yet fully realized the potential of artificial intelligence.
AI is unlike anything we’ve created before. It allows computers to truly understand our needs, think for themselves, and opens up completely new possibilities for how we use technology.
OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman
The company is still considering the project, and Sam Altman explained that it will be a while before anything comes of it. He cautioned against expecting results quickly. However, the CEO also mentioned that OpenAI plans to create a limited line of devices.
Altman suggested these new devices will be visually appealing, but more significantly, they’ll fundamentally change how we interact with technology, work, have fun, and go about our daily lives. It will be fascinating to see if OpenAI can make a real impact on the hardware market and how they’ll incorporate AI into these devices.
