Optimism, that paragon of Ethereum’s Layer-2 aspirations, is reportedly trimming its team like a particularly harsh winter coat-20% of its staff, to be precise.
Internal whispers (or perhaps just the sound of a teakettle whistling) confirm that the cuts began swirling through the office like a particularly dramatic waltz on Tuesday. Staff across protocol development and ecosystem initiatives have been left wondering if they’re dancing or being dumped.
Some employees, ever the dramatists, have taken to social media to share their tales of woe. A certain Wil Schmor, for instance, declared: “I was impacted by layoffs at Optimism today. I’m grateful for the 5 months working on protocol scaling… and the Scaling Summit at ETHDenver as my top highlight. Open to PM roles and consulting…” One can only imagine the tears of joy.
I was impacted by layoffs at Optimism today
I’m grateful for the 5 months working on protocol scaling across the OP Stack with the Scaling Summit at ETHDenver as my top highlight
I’ve been building in crypto since 2019 and don’t plan on stopping
Open to PM roles and consulting…

OP Token Suffers a Massive Blow in the Bear Market
The OP token, once a beacon of hope, now languishes at $0.12-down more than 55% this year. A veritable financial equivalent of a well-dressed man in a rainstorm.
Optimism, that stalwart of Ethereum’s Layer-2 ambitions, is built on optimistic rollup technology. A name that sounds like a cheerful suggestion for a weekend getaway.
The project also leads the OP Stack infrastructure initiative, which powers several chains across the emerging “Superchain” ecosystem. A term that sounds less like a sci-fi novel and more like a very confused spreadsheet.
It remains unclear whether the layoffs are tied to broader restructuring, market conditions, or a sudden aversion to the Superchain roadmap. One can only speculate, as Optimism has yet to issue an official statement-perhaps they’re too busy reorganizing their priorities.
Optimism has not yet issued an official statement about the reported workforce reductions.
