A new live-action Scooby-Doo series is coming to Netflix, and one of the actors from the popular 2002 movie has shared their reaction. Scooby-Doo has been a fan favorite since its debut in 1969, with numerous animated series over the decades. Many remember the 2002 live-action film, which featured a well-loved cast and was written by James Gunn early in his career. The film was a hit, leading to a sequel and several direct-to-video spin-offs. Now, Netflix is planning to revive the franchise with a new live-action series.
Matthew Lillard, known for playing Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo films, recently shared his opinions on the upcoming Scooby-Doo series on Netflix while discussing his return to the Scream franchise. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Lillard expressed his excitement for the new show, saying he believes Scooby-Doo deserves a comeback. He also had some ideas about how the series should be structured.
Lillard believes a new animated Scooby-Doo series is essential. He points out it’s been years since the last one, which he feels is a mistake. He argues that animation is a fantastic way to teach kids about stories, often serving as their first exposure to spooky tales. The show also highlights important values like friendship, teamwork, and solving problems, often revealing that the ‘monster’ is just a person in disguise – a lesson kids can really benefit from.
Despite his concerns, Lillard expressed optimism for the live-action Scooby-Doo show, hoping it will stay true to the original’s charm. He explained, “I’m hoping they build on what works, but I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to Scooby-Doo.” He emphasized that the heart of the franchise lies in the strong bond of friendship, and he’s eager to see that preserved.
What We Know About the New Scooby-Doo Series

Netflix and Warner Bros. are teaming up to create a new live-action Scooby-Doo series. The show will have eight episodes and tell the story of how the Mystery Inc. kids first met and began solving mysteries. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, known for their work on Citadel, are writing the series, with Greg Berlanti (who worked on The Arrowverse) as an executive producer. Netflix describes the show as a fresh, updated take on the classic group of teenage detectives and their famous canine companion.
As a huge Scooby-Doo fan, I’m really excited about the new Netflix movie! It looks like Shaggy and Daphne are heading to summer camp for one last adventure, and things quickly get spooky. They stumble into a mystery involving a missing Great Dane puppy – and this little pup might have seen something really scary, like a supernatural murder! Luckily, they team up with Velma, who’s a local girl and super smart, and this quirky guy named Freddy to try and crack the case. It sounds like a classic Scooby-Doo vibe with a fresh twist!
