The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films promise appearances from many beloved characters, but not all original X-Men cast members will return. These next two Avengers movies will introduce Doctor Doom as the major villain, bringing heroes from alternate universes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This will finally allow fans to see characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four, previously with Fox, team up with the established MCU Avengers in what’s expected to be an exciting crossover. While actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn are confirmed to reprise their roles, one original X-Men actor has stated they won’t be involved.
Famke Janssen recently spoke with Kristian Harloff about her career, including her new Netflix series, Amsterdam Empire. Harloff asked if she’d been asked to reprise her role in Avengers: Doomsday, but Janssen confirmed she won’t be returning and wasn’t even interested in the possibility. She explained that as an executive producer on Amsterdam Empire, she has creative control and a voice in how the show is made. She doesn’t believe the filmmakers of Doomsday would want her input, stating, “I wouldn’t be asked back on Doomsday, or anywhere else, with that kind of influence. That’s not what they’re looking for from me.”
Janssen explained she’s focused on the future and doesn’t dwell on past roles. She doesn’t find it interesting to worry about small parts or previous work, feeling she’s moved forward after a long and successful career – having appeared in eighty films and earned her current position. She’s determined to make the most of this moment.
Famke Janssen said she’d be open to joining a big ensemble film like Avengers: Doomsday. She recently finished filming One Second After in Bulgaria, where she also designed her character’s costumes. Janssen enjoys having creative outlets alongside her acting work, saying she’s always seeking opportunities to create.
Famke Janssen Skipping Avengers: Doomsday Is Best For Both Parties

Famke Janssen did a great job as Jean Grey in X-Men, but it’s probably best she doesn’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday. As she’s explained, she’s now in a position where she has more creative control and influence on her projects. While a return to the role might be enjoyable for fans, it wouldn’t be the right move for her career as she establishes herself as an experienced actress.
But the biggest issue is probably the sheer number of heroes they’re planning to include. It doesn’t make sense why actors who are now building successful careers would return for small roles with only a few lines, especially if their characters might be killed off. Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey died in X-Men: The Last Stand, and it might be a better idea to bring back Sophie Turner, who played Jean Grey and whose version seemingly survived the events of Dark Phoenix in her own universe.
The focus on the original X-Men suggests they won’t be around for the next big storyline, Avengers: Secret Wars, given their age. New heroes are needed to continue the team’s legacy, and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey represents a past era. Plus, her character famously killed Cyclops in X-Men: The Last Stand. James Marsden’s return hints this isn’t the same reality where Jean died, so bringing Janssen back could confuse audiences when the X-Men officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
