Oscars 2026 History-Making Moments: Jessie Buckley, “Golden” and More

One piece of history after another was made at the 2026 Oscars.

The Academy Awards ceremony on March 15th was a historic night, with many memorable wins. Hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the show is sure to be remembered for years to come. You can find a complete list of the winners here.

Jessie Buckley, star of Hamnet, was the first Irish actress to win the Best Actress award. Meanwhile, Amy Madigan, from Weapons, set a new record for the longest wait between her first Oscar nomination (for Twice in a Lifetime in 1986) and her first win, which she received this year as Best Supporting Actress.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by becoming the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for her work on the film Sinners.

Additionally, “Golden” by KPop Demon Hunter became the first Kpop song to win Best Original Song, and Sentimental Value gave Norway its first-ever win in the Best International Film category.

Although Sean Penn couldn’t attend the ceremony, his performance in One Battle After Another earned him his third Oscar, making him just the fourth male actor to achieve this feat. He joins Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson, and Walter Brennan as a three-time Oscar winner.

Oscar viewers will likely remember the unusual tie for Best Live Action Short Film between The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva. This was only the seventh tie in the entire history of the Academy Awards.

The ceremony included the very first Academy Award for Best Casting, presented to Cassandra Kulukundis for her work on One Battle After Another. The experienced casting director expressed her gratitude that she and others in her field were finally receiving the recognition they deserved.

During her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to the Academy for creating this award category and to the casting directors who worked hard to establish it, even when faced with obstacles. She dedicated the award to all casting directors, especially those who hadn’t received recognition for their work, including not having their names appear in movie credits.

Before the awards ceremony even began, a historic moment had already occurred. When the nominations were revealed on January 21st, the film Sinners received a record-breaking 16 nominations, making it the most nominated film ever in Academy Awards history.

The film Sinners also marked a historic achievement for costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who already had two Oscar wins. With this nomination, she became the most-nominated Black woman in Oscars history, earning a total of five nominations.

Despite losing to Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet received his third Best Actor nomination – and also a Best Picture nomination as a producer. This made him the youngest person since Marlon Brando in 1954 to earn nominations in both categories.

This was a landmark moment for Steven Spielberg. The acclaimed director, a three-time Oscar winner, now holds the record for the most Best Picture nominations as a producer, thanks to his work on Hamnet. Over his impressive six-decade career, he’s received 14 nominations for producing and a total of 24 nominations across all categories.
