The 97th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, stirred up news not due to significant political declarations, but because of what was conspicuously absent – any references or mentions regarding President Donald Trump.
This year’s Oscars ceremony was unusually quiet on political issues compared to previous years, with no one mentioning the current president, even though the event was longer than usual. In contrast to past ceremonies, where late-night comedians and Hollywood celebrities often mocked the president openly, this time around there were no such jabs at him.

Despite Jimmy Kimmel’s history of reading Trump’s tweets on his show, he was largely left out of the conversation this time around. Previously, Kimmel had read aloud Trump’s critical comments regarding Kimmel’s hosting at the Oscars, such as Trump’s criticism of his 2024 monologue. However, this year, there were no such mentions. This change in tone has sparked speculation about the diminishing impact of Hollywood and the limited success of its political activism.
Hollywood Bet Big—And Lost
For quite some time, the entertainment sector has been perceived as a significant cultural influencer, often siding with politicians such as Kamala Harris. However, the 2024 election outcomes demonstrated that these efforts fell short in connecting with average citizens. Trump not only claimed an Electoral College triumph but also won the majority of popular votes, marking a strong rejection of Hollywood’s political messages. Now, the industry—previously regarded as trendsetters—is grappling with the realization of its diminishing impact, facing a time of introspection and reassessment.

Contrast the subdued Oscars of today with earlier years when award ceremonies often showcased Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appearing via satellite or high-profile celebrities wearing badges and symbols to represent their current cause. At this year’s Golden Globes, Zelenskyy delivered a speech commending the “free world.” However, only recently he was seated with Trump at the White House, involved in a heated discussion that ended with him being removed from the presidential residence.
A Muted Show
On Conan O’Brien’s show, which typically steers clear of politically sensitive subjects, there was a brief mention of the tragic Los Angeles wildfires, but otherwise, global issues were mostly ignored. Even usual celebrity activism over international disputes seemed quieter than normal. Daryl Hannah was the only one to say “Glory to Ukraine!” during an award presentation, and a vague reference to standing up against a powerful Russian found its way into O’Brien’s monologue. Overall, the Academy chose to keep a low profile in terms of addressing global affairs.
During an unexpected turn of events that night, well-known critic of President Trump, Mark Hamill, surprisingly appeared on stage as a presenter. Renowned for his fiery social media attacks against the president, Hamill left audiences astonished by sticking to his prepared script. It seems he’s taken heed after experiencing numerous public mishaps. Moreover, it appears he’s also learned the importance of wearing a well-fitting belt; his pants slipped during his speech at the BAFTAs, causing a brief wardrobe malfunction.
Mark Hamill’s pants fall down and he tries to play it off.

Thankfully, the Oscars were spared a repeat of that embarrassing display.
A Hollywood Reckoning
This year’s hesitance from the Academy to delve deeply into political commentary might signal a broader transformation. Maybe, after years of educating audiences, the entertainment industry is coming to understand that people don’t turn to awards shows for political sermons. The overwhelming rejection of Hollywood’s favored candidates and narratives in the 2024 election served as an alarm bell, and the quiet at this year’s Oscars carries a powerful message.

As the sparkle and pomp diminish, there’s no denying that Hollywood’s dominance over cultural and political discourse is weakening. With Trump back in office, the industry’s sway seems to have lost its former strength. And from the subdued tone of this year’s Oscars, it appears even Hollywood itself acknowledges this shift.
