Oscars Responds to Backlash for Cutting Off Kpop Demon Hunters Speech

Not everything was golden at the 2026 Oscars.

The producer of the awards show on March 15th responded to criticism about the songwriters for the song “Golden” from Kpop Demon Hunters. The song won Best Original Song, a first for K-pop, but the songwriters had their acceptance speech cut short. (See photos of the red carpet here.)

As soon as Ejae finished speaking and moved away from the microphone to let another songwriter have their turn, the orchestra started playing, signaling the end of her segment and the beginning of a commercial break.

In a recent interview with Variety on March 16th, Rob Mills, executive vice president of unscripted and alternative entertainment at Walt Disney Television, said the team will review how they manage speeches when planning for next year. He acknowledged they need to find a better approach, stating, “We need to seriously consider how to improve this.”

Mills recognizes how tough it is to end a connection, especially when it feels like that person’s only chance at something special.

Should we decide who will be the main spokesperson? Perhaps the conversation could continue privately, with updates shared on social media or a similar platform.

No matter what happens next year, Mills is looking for the best way to ensure every winner gets the recognition they deserve.

The celebrated songwriters weren’t the only ones with trouble getting their acceptance speeches in at the Conan O’Brien-hosted award show. After a rare tie in the Best Live Action Short Film category, Alexandre Singh, the filmmaker behind Two People Exchanging Saliva, had his speech cut short. He was speaking after the producers of The Singers.

In fact, the microphone started to lower down into the stage just as he approached it.

O’Brien jokingly congratulated the winners, then lightheartedly complained, “You’ve just upset everyone who participated in Oscar pools!” He added, “Even though we’re friends, cutting off someone’s microphone while they’re talking is pretty funny.”
