The Winter 2026 anime season is shaping up to be fantastic, with returning favorites like Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Hell’s Paradise. There’s also a great selection of brand new series coming out, such as Sentenced to Be a Hero and Journal the Witch. And that’s just the beginning – dozens more new anime are planned for the rest of the year. One highly anticipated show, Though I Am an Inept Villainess, produced by the well-established animation studio Doga Kobo, has been moved from an April release to July. Doga Kobo has been creating anime since 1973 and is known for popular titles like Oshi no Ko, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun, and Plastic Memories.
Last March, the studio announced they were creating an anime based on the popular light novel, Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court, by Satsuki Nakamura with illustrations by Kana Yuki. The anime’s official X account recently revealed that production had been delayed. This explains why we hadn’t seen a trailer yet, even as April approached. Mitsue Yamazaki, a director known for her work on series like Attack on Titan, Bleach, and Kids on the Slope, will be leading the project.
What Is The Plot of Though I Am an Inept Villainess?

The story takes place within the luxurious inner court of the Kingdom of Ei, specifically in the Maiden Court where the empress and her four royal consorts live. These women are all selected from the kingdom’s five most powerful families. Reirin Kou, a promising candidate to become the next empress, appears perfect – known for her grace, virtue, and beauty. However, she suffers from poor health.
Keigetsu Shu constantly lives in the shadow of Reirin and is considered a disappointment to the Maiden Court. Driven by intense jealousy, especially during a rare comet appearance, she tried to murder Reirin by attempting to push her from a balcony. The attempt failed, and Keigetsu was imprisoned. While in prison, awaiting her punishment, she used magic to swap bodies with Reirin and take over her life.
Keigetsu’s choices create problems for the original Reirin. Although Keigetsu now possesses beauty and gains attention, she’s limited by Reirin’s weak physical condition. The story follows Keigetsu as she attempts to change her fate by inhabiting Reirin’s body and navigating the difficulties of life within the Maiden Court.
