Deep Sea Trawling is a recently added fishing activity in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), introduced with the Sailing skill release.
Trawling lets you catch large groups of fish using a large net. It’s an effective method for quickly gathering fish and earning Sailing XP.
In this quick guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to get started with this activity.
Deep Sea Trawling Fishing Guide | OSRS

Let’s start by outlining the essential requirements for deep sea trawling. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Level 56 Sailing
- Level 69 Fishing
- A Trawling Net facility on your boat. The earliest one is the Rope Trawling Net, which unlocks at Level 56 Sailing.
Just a heads-up, if you can get your hands on them, having a Fathom Stone and a Chum Station on your boat is a really good idea. They’ll seriously help you out!
Okay, so I figured out a couple of things that really help with fishing. First, the Fathom Stone makes it way easier to locate those sweet fishing spots – you know, the shoals. And then there’s the Chum Station; I can use that to craft Fish Offcuts, which are awesome bait. Seriously, these two things have upped my fishing game!
If you’ve unlocked Trawler’s Trust, it’s also helpful to fill a Keg with it. This gives you a 5% chance of getting extra fish. You unlock Trawler’s Trust by charting 50 different seas.
Also, equipping Fish Crates on your ship is really useful. They can store up to 400 fish, letting you transport a lot more than if you only used the Cargo Hold.
These optional facilities aren’t essential, but they can significantly improve how quickly and easily you search!

We also suggest assigning crew members with strong Deckhandiness skills to operate your trawling nets. While a Deckhandiness of 2 is the minimum, a crewmate with 4 would be even better.
Having a crewmate skilled in helmsmanship is also helpful. At one point, you’ll need to control both the fishing net and steer the ship, so you’ll need someone to manage whichever task you can’t handle yourself.
The Fishing Process

Okay, so if I want to start trawling, the first thing I need to do is find a school of fish. They show up on the water as these circular, swirling lines – almost like mini whirlpools. It’s how I spot them before I cast my line!

When you find one, position your boat directly over it. Then, use the controls in the lower right corner of the screen to deploy your nets.
Keep an eye on red chat messages – they’ll let you know if your net strength is right for the fish you’re attempting to catch.
Once you reach the correct depth, a blue bar will show above the fish. Then, simply wait until the bar is almost gone.

As the time nears its end, be prepared! The group of fish will begin to swim, and you’ll need to follow them with your ship.
Each crew member has a specific job: either managing the fishing nets or steering the ship. Whoever is steering doesn’t handle the nets, and the person managing the nets doesn’t steer.
The school of fish will eventually stop moving. When it does, a blue bar will reappear above it. Just repeat the process of lowering your net to fish, and you’re all set!
Keep repeating the fishing process until you’ve caught everything you need. Don’t forget to check your net and move your catch to a fish crate or your Cargo Hold – the net can hold up to 200 fish!
So, that covers everything you need to begin Deep Sea Trawling in Old School RuneScape! We hope this guide helps you get started with this challenging, end-game activity.
