The recent update to Old School RuneScape (OSRS) lets you construct and personalize your own boat for sailing adventures.

It can be tricky knowing where to begin, and there’s a lot to learn and keep up with at first.

In this quick guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to build and customize your boat with ease.

How to Build and Customize Your Boat | OSRS – Sailing

Basics and Core Part Upgrades

Shipbuilding becomes available as soon as you unlock Sailing by completing the Pandemonium quest.

To begin building ships, simply speak with any Shipwright found at any dock. For instance, you can find Junior Jim in Pandemonium. Once you’ve spoken to a Shipwright, choose the “Customise-boat” option to be taken to the ship building area.

Once inside, find a nearby bulletin board and click on it. This will let you change the design of your boat.

This lets you buy improvements for the main parts of your ship. These upgrades will change what your ship can do, specifically:

  • Hull – Speed and Hitpoints.
  • Keel – Hitpoints and Armour.
  • Helm – Rapids and Tangled Kelp resistance.
  • Sails – Storm Resistance, Speed Boost Duration, and Acceleration.
  • Trims and Flags – Cosmetics.
  • Brazier – Protects from cold damage in icy seas.

These are the essential components, but not everything a boat needs! They’re the main parts, but there are other important pieces we should discuss.

Facilities

Beyond the main components, you can improve your boat by adding and upgrading its Facilities. To access your boat, use the Gangplank.

This boat offers a variety of Facilities, and you have the freedom to arrange them however you like. Here’s a quick overview of each type of Facility:

  • Cannons – Used in naval combat.
  • Salvaging – Hooks that you can use to recover salvage and shipwrecks.
  • Trawling – Nets used to catch fish.
  • Storage – Your cargo hold, which contains ship-relevant items. Interact with it to modify it.
  • Stations – Facilities that are mainly used for crafting.
  • Wind – Allows you to catch winds and use them as Wind Motes, giving you a boost while sailing.
  • Misc – Various useful facilities that don’t fit any of the previous categories.

Just a heads-up, you won’t have access to everything right away. A lot of the cool places and stuff you can build will need some exploring and leveling up your sailing skills to unlock the blueprints first!

Making Hull Parts and Repair Kits

To improve your ship’s durability, you’ll need Hull Parts. You can make these at the Shipwrights’ Workbench, which you’ll find at any dock. Simply interact with the workbench and choose to craft Hull Parts.

Building or upgrading Skiffs usually needs 5 Planks and a small amount of Gold. The specific type of Plank needed will vary depending on the Hull Part you’re making.

Okay, so I figured out you can actually combine five smaller Hull Parts to make one bigger one, as long as they’re all made of the same wood. These larger Hull Parts are what you need if you’re trying to upgrade to, or build yourself, a Sloop!

Besides that, you can make Repair Kits at the Shipwrights’ Workbench. While they don’t help with building or customization, they’re really useful for quickly fixing your boat while you’re sailing, so it’s good to know about them.

Keeping Track of Materials

Here’s a quick tip: you can keep track of the materials you need even when you’re not at the Shipwright’s Workbench. To do this, start by clicking on your Sailing level.

Next, click on Core Boat Parts and Boat Facilities. This will display a list of available parts. Simply click on a part to add it to the chat box. It’s that easy!
