Outlander and Killing Eve favourites join starry cast for new Sense and Sensibility film

The stars seem to be perfectly positioned for the fresh take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, as it has just finalized a number of well-known actors for its ensemble.

The recently announced production, jointly led by Focus Features and Working Title Films, initially revealed Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood. Now, it has added several well-known actors to its cast.

Actress Caitríona Balfe, best known for her role in Outlander, is set to join the cast as Mrs. Dashwood, the mother of Elinor and Marianne. Frank Dillane, recognized from Killing Eve, will portray John Willoughby, who initially captures Marianne’s heart. Meanwhile, Fiona Shaw, also known for her work in Killing Eve, will take on the role of Mrs. Jennings, a woman who provides shelter to both sisters during their visits to London.

In the 1917 film, George MacKay takes on the role of Elinor’s romantic interest, Edward Ferrars. Meanwhile, Herbert Nordrum (known for The Worst Person in the World) will portray Colonel Brandon, who later becomes Marianne’s suitor, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach (from The Capture) is cast as the youngest Dashwood sister, Margaret.

Indeed, it’s not the initial instance that Jane Austen’s novel has been transformed for the big screen. The 1995 movie, featuring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson, is arguably the most renowned adaptation. Not only did Thompson star in it, but she also wrote the script.

For the upcoming movie, it’s Diana Reid, a renowned author with multiple bestsellers, who is in charge of scriptwriting. On the other hand, Georgia Oakley, a nominee for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), will be taking on the director’s role.

Apart from being recognized for her lead role throughout the entire series of Outlander, Balfe is also widely acclaimed for her BAFTA-nominated performance in Belfast and, more recently, her contribution to The Amateur.

In my perspective as a dedicated cinephile, I must admit that Shaw has left an indelible mark on the silver screen. Her unforgettable performances in series like Killing Eve and the Harry Potter movies, not to mention Star Wars: Andor, have undeniably made her a household name. Indeed, her impressive portfolio spans far beyond these titles.

In recent times, she’s taken on roles in Hot Milk and Echo Valley, and you might recognize her from True Detective: Night Country and Bad Sisters as well.

Sense and Sensibility

Storyline: This narrative delves into the lives of two sisters, Elinor, portrayed by Edgar-Jones, and Marianne, embodied by Creed-Miles. After the passing of their father, they find themselves in a precarious financial situation. The tale unfolds as these women grapple with matters of the heart, grief, and societal expectations, all while attempting to secure a stable future.

Jane Austen’s first novel, titled “Sense and Sensibility,” came out in 1811. At that time, it was published without revealing her as the author.

Due to the passing of their father, the family is compelled to relocate from their Sussex estate and live more modestly with a distant relative in Devon. It is during this time that Elinor and Marianne encounter their initial romantic interests and heartache.

The forthcoming movie faces significant expectations, especially since the 1995 version garnered a total of seven Oscar nominations, among them best picture, best actress, and best adapted screenplay, for which Thompson was awarded.

The production of this upcoming movie has started in the UK, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. We’ll surely receive lots of intriguing updates as time goes on.
