Outlander: Blood of My Blood cast react to “shocking” season 1 finale: “Nobody saw that coming”

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale.

The first season of Blood of My Blood finished with the dramatic twists Outlander fans expect, ending on a cliffhanger involving time travel and a surprising death.

As a huge fan of the show, I think a lot of us were expecting the two couples – Brian and Ellen from the 1700s, and Julia and Henry from the 20th century – to finally come back together by the end of the season. But honestly, there was one twist that even the actors didn’t see coming when they first read the scripts – it totally shocked everyone!

In the first season of Outlander, Jamie Fraser explained to Claire how his parents, Brian and Ellen, managed to flee Castle Leoch, remarking that they’d escaped “right under the noses of three hundred clansmen!”

The first season of Blood of My Blood ended with Brian successfully intervening to prevent Ellen from marrying Malcolm Grant, rescuing her just in time.

Malcolm unexpectedly found them in a hallway at Leoch and wouldn’t allow Ellen to leave. This led to a fierce and bloody fight between Malcolm and Brian, ultimately resulting in Malcolm’s death.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see them finally together and free. After ten episodes of waiting, Ellen can escape a marriage she never wanted, and it feels like Malcolm’s death was the only path to that freedom for everyone involved.

She explained that they didn’t want to kill him, and Brian repeatedly pleaded with them not to, realizing the inevitable outcome. They offered him chances to de-escalate, but he was determined to get revenge, fueled by his uncle’s influence. Ultimately, she said it was a matter of survival – either he would kill them, or they would have to kill him.

“That was unfortunate for old Malcy, but you gotta do what you gotta do,” added Jamie Roy (Brian).

I think viewers will be really surprised. While many already know the general outcome – that the characters end up together and have a family, including Jamie Fraser – it’s the journey of *how* that happens which is the most exciting part.

Honestly, I was completely blindsided by what they did with Malcolm’s character. It really came out of nowhere! And knowing how much everyone loves him, I predict this is going to be seriously divisive among viewers. I think it’s going to spark a lot of debate, and probably some hurt feelings, but in a way that proves how invested people are in the show.

Jeremy Irvine and Hermione Corfield, the actors who play Henry and Julia, were just as shocked to learn about Malcolm’s death as everyone else.

“I think the death is pretty shocking,” said Hermione. “It will be quite shocking to fans.”

Jeremy agreed, saying he was really upset about it. He particularly enjoyed working with Jhon Lumsden, who plays Malcolm, and found it difficult to read the part of the script that involved him. “It really hurt,” he said.
