Excitedly speaking here as a die-hard fan, Electronic Arts along with Full Circle Studios has finally disclosed the release date for the much-awaited free-to-play skating sensation, “Skate” (styled as “skate.”). The buzz surrounding this game has been building up for over five years now, and the latest trailer offers an exclusive sneak peek into some never-before-seen gameplay. I can hardly contain my excitement to learn when PlayStation, Xbox, and PC enthusiasts like me will be able to hit the streets of San Vansterdam for the first time and show off our board skills!
Starting September 16th, the game Skate can be played for free on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. At launch, it will support cross-play and cross-progression, allowing players to enjoy the game with friends across different platforms and retain their progress. However, this is an “early access” release, meaning that while you can start playing on the 16th, it’s not the complete version 1.0. More content will be added over time as players provide feedback and contribute to the game’s development.
In this new version of ‘Skate’, things might seem a bit different compared to earlier ones, but don’t worry, the controls remain unchanged. The popular flick-it control system is back, ensuring fans can enjoy the familiar gameplay from the original releases. The developers are also adding some fresh elements to the gameplay, such as the newly introduced slappys and wallies, along with parkour-style on-foot controls.
In addition to skating, you’ll find a wide variety of tracks from well-known musicians such as Turnstile, Denzel Curry, and Earth, Wind & Fire. However, these songs aren’t what players will hear throughout the game’s duration. Instead, the soundtrack, much like the game itself, will change with each season, introducing new artists for skaters to groove along with.
Full Circle explained that as a live-service game, Skate will consistently update its content every season. Each season might introduce new features, activities, cosmetics, music, and more. Seasons are planned to roll out every three months, which means there’ll be four seasons annually. The first season kicks off soon after the early access launch, with further details about seasons and the Skate Pass (similar to a battle pass) coming next month.
In the case of this free-to-play game called Skate, you’ll find microtransactions. Previously, Full Circle assured us that these transactions do not provide an unfair advantage and are solely for cosmetic items.
Full Circle has been sharing bite-sized updates about its upcoming Skate game through a blog series titled The Grind. Recently, they revealed additional features that go beyond seasonal content and music. The developer confirmed that a single server can accommodate up to 150 skaters, and there’s an option for players to revisit the tutorial area in future updates. However, at this point, it doesn’t appear Full Circle plans on collaborating with any professional skaters or external parties in the near future, but they haven’t ruled out the possibility entirely.
