Netflix has a great selection of horror movies right now, including recent releases like Heart Eyes, I Know What You Did Last Summer, 28 Years Later, and Influencer. You’ll also find original films like Frankenstein, Army of the Dead, Day Shift, and The Ritual, alongside classic horror titles, both new and old, such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Green Room, Christine, and Gerald’s Game. However, a lesser-known horror film is currently topping the charts. Fans who enjoyed Peacemaker or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might even recognize one of the actors!
Chukwudi Iwuji is the standout star, and you might recognize him from shows like Play Dirty on Prime Video and The Day of the Jackal on Peacock. He’s currently featured in The Girl Who Got Away, which is a huge success on Netflix. Let’s take a look at what’s making it so popular.
What Is The Girl Who Got Away About & How Well Is It Doing on Netflix?

The Girl Who Got Away follows Christina Bowden, the sole survivor of serial killer Elizabeth Caulfield, who kidnapped six children hoping to raise them as her own. Twenty-five years later, Christina is in her thirties and wants to start a family. She decides to adopt a child named Lisa, and after a series of home visits from social workers, the adoption will be finalized, making them legally mother and daughter.
Officer Jamie Nwosu delivers shocking news to Christina: Elizabeth has escaped from jail. Soon after, people connected to Christina begin dying one by one, leading Officer Nwosu to realize Elizabeth has been in prison for a long time – so how could she know who’s close to Christina? This mystery sparks a chain of surprising twists that continue until the very end of the story.
From December 29th to January 4th, the film The Girl Who Got Away held the number eight spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list in the US. It performed better than both the critically acclaimed Priscilla and the popular sequel Pitch Perfect 2 during that week.
Before The Girl Who Got Away climbed the charts, several other titles were popular on Netflix. Ford v. Ferrari landed in seventh place, Man on Fire took sixth, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the runner-up. The documentary Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story topped the list, while Wrath of Man, starring Jason Statham, held steady at number three in its second week. Rounding out the top five were Netflix originals Kpop Demon Hunters and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
Overall, The Girl Who Got Away is a well-made, suspenseful thriller. While it has a few twists, they don’t detract from the story, and it’s likely to remain popular on Netflix for a while.
