Overwatch 2’s Season 18 will see the introduction of Progression 2.0, a comprehensive update directly from Blizzard Entertainment. This fresh system overhauls hero progression, offering simplified levels, unique prizes, and attractive cosmetics that aim to make every game more satisfying with added rewards.
What Is Progression 2.0 in Overwatch 2?
In Progression 2.0, the traditional Hero progression model gets swapped out for a more captivating alternative. Now, as players advance, they will unveil Ascended portrait frames at every 20th level achievement. These frames undergo stylistic and energetic transformations, culminating in fiery effects by level 60. The frames become visible during Hero Selection and the Kill Cam, showcasing your commitment to both allies and adversaries.
Furthermore, as players progress through levels, they receive Hero badges. These badges are part of a traditional rarity system, ranging from common (gray) to legendary (gold), which increase the prestige of your profile.
Better Rewards and Easier Tracking
Players of Overwatch 2 were seeking rewards that carried significance. With the introduction of Progression 2.0, Blizzard has made good on their promise by unveiling a fresh Hero interface displaying 3D character models, transparent level progression, and an orderly list of rewards to keep track of.
Advancing your Heroes progressively grants access to Epic and Legendary reward chests, plus character-unique decorative items like name tags and titles. These rewards are not only for newcomers; veterans will immediately receive all previous borders, emblems, and cosmetics they’ve already accumulated.
Helping New Players Progress Faster
Additionally, Blizzard has introduced Starter Packs for novice players in their game, which include Cosmetic Kits. These packs grant new players cosmetics tailored to specific heroes and credits during the first 20 levels of hero progression. This feature facilitates the creation of a collection without requiring additional purchases. The items from these starter packs have been taken out of the Hero Gallery, but before Season 18 starts, any current owners will receive refunds in the form of credits.
Competitive Mode Safeguards
In its design, Progression 2.0 prioritizes competitive gaming experiences. During matches, opposing teams won’t have visibility into Ascended borders or Hero cards until after the game commences. Post-elimination, only cards will be visible in the Kill Cam, and content creators can utilize unique privacy settings to conceal their Hero history from public view.

As an enthusiastic Overwatch fan, I’m thrilled about the rollout of Progression 2.0 in Overwatch 2 Season 18! This update promises a significant overhaul that long-time players like myself can look forward to, as there’s now even more incentive to keep pushing forward. And for those joining the fray, Progression 2.0 offers quicker access to cool cosmetics and rewards, making it an inviting environment for newcomers!
