Overwatch 2 Will Kick Off 2026 With “Something Huge,” Teases Game Director

The introduction of Perks, the dynamic Stadium mode, and the revamped progression system have certainly given it a new lease on life. This transformation is largely due to their innovative “annual” update strategy, as game director Aaron Keller puts it, they aim to kick off each year with a major, game-changing event, followed by a significant mid-year update.

As a gamer, I’ll admit there was a moment of hesitation last time around. We weren’t entirely confident about sticking to an annual update schedule, seeing as it was uncharted territory for us. The fear was that tweaking the core game might not sit well with our fans. But, thankfully, your positive reactions gave us the boost we needed! So, here we are again, gearing up for Season 15, ready to bring you the Perks update this year. Let’s roll!

Reflecting on our past game releases in Overwatch, it feels like we’ve been playing it safe. However, introducing groundbreaking features has definitely fueled your enthusiasm for what’s next. The same goes for us! Moving forward, I can proudly say that we are eager to continue this pace as the main strategy for the upcoming year of Overwatch.

Keller affirmed that the upcoming year would begin with an extraordinary event that significantly alters how people perceive playing the game. Each year, we seem to be growing more accustomed to creating these larger and larger transformative events. Additionally, we aim to sustain this excitement by introducing a mid-year season that further develops those features and focuses on enhancing existing gameplay aspects.

It’s uncertain what might happen next, but given that PvE Hero Missions were canceled, a resurrection of those seems improbable. However, Keller mentioned that Overwatch could be fully operational again when it re-enters the world and lore. New story missions could potentially emerge, even though Invasion has already passed. It would certainly be intriguing!

This latest season introduces a fresh Support character named Wuyang, who manipulates water to heal teammates and repel enemies.
