Overwatch Ditches the 2, Launches 5 New Heroes in Blizzard’s Bid to Revive the Shooter

Blizzard is working on a plan to refresh Overwatch 2, which will revert to being called simply Overwatch.

The team has decided to move away from treating the project as a direct sequel, about three years after it first came out.

While Overwatch 2 hasn’t been a complete failure since launching in October 2022, it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as the original Overwatch.

It never really gained the popularity, excitement, or backing that originally made it so successful.

The goal is to bring renewed attention to the game, now called Overwatch, and the developers are starting with the introduction of five new characters you can play: Domina (a tank), Emre and Anran (both damage dealers), and Mizuki and Jetpack Cat (both support characters).

I’m super hyped – all the new characters are dropping next week, on February 10th, kicking off Season 1! And get this – they’re saying five more heroes are coming throughout the rest of 2026. Seriously, bring on the heroes!

The game is also getting new ‘sub-classes’ that give each character more specific abilities, expanding on their existing roles. This is designed to refresh the character lineup and add more strategic options through new passive bonuses.

It will be interesting to watch if Overwatch can attract more players in the coming weeks. While it still has a dedicated fanbase, it’s been having trouble keeping up with other popular games, like Marvel Rivals, which clearly took inspiration from Overwatch.

What are your thoughts on the new Overwatch? Are you planning to give it a try? Let’s keep the discussion friendly and work together in the comments!
