Blizzard Entertainment has revealed a lot of exciting news for Overwatch, including a major seasonal update with ongoing stories throughout the year and plans to add ten new playable characters. Five of those characters will be available this week. Most importantly, fans are excited about the game reverting to simply Overwatch – a change many have been requesting since the release of Overwatch 2.
Considering the effort and expense put into rebranding, it’s reasonable to ask if the team is acknowledging a previous mistake. But according to Walter Kong, who leads the game’s live service operations, that’s not the case – at least, that’s what he stated in a recent press conference with Eurogamer.
Looking back, I wish we hadn’t named it Overwatch 2. However, that time was ultimately good for us. We successfully shifted to a constantly updated live service game, which was a very difficult process, but we managed it.
Those difficult years were essential for our growth and getting to where we are now. We wouldn’t have been able to reach this point without going through them. Remembering that time is tiring, but it’s what allows us to move Overwatch forward.
According to game director Aaron Keller, the current Overwatch is the only Overwatch there will ever be – it’s a game they intend to continually improve and support indefinitely. He hopes players will feel it’s reached its full potential, and he’s already hearing feedback that the game has finally lived up to expectations. Keller emphasizes this isn’t an admission of past shortcomings, but rather a sign that they’ve successfully delivered on their vision, based on positive community response.
We want players to know that Overwatch is a long-term game, and they shouldn’t worry about it being replaced by Overwatch 3.
While a third installment isn’t entirely off the table – even the developers acknowledge saying ‘never’ is a strong word – the main focus is on continuing to support the game as long as players keep enjoying it. They’re committed to this team-based hero shooter for the foreseeable future.
Overwatch’s new season, Reign of Talon, starts on February 10th. It will introduce new heroes and stunning Mythic Skins for Mei and Mercy. The game’s training area, Stadium, is getting an update with a Hero Builder to help new players customize their characters easily, and the menus are being completely redesigned.
Okay, so I’m super excited because every season from now on is going to bring a brand new hero to play as, plus a bunch of fresh maps to battle it out on. But get this – they’re also bringing the game to the new Nintendo Switch 2 this Spring! Seriously, it’s a great time to be a player.
