Absolute Superman #1 Review: When Superpowers Become a Force To Be Reckoned With

Initially, Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval’s “Absolute Superman” #1 doesn’t seem like a radical shift from what we’re accustomed to. The setup of this new Krypton, though unique, retains many recognizable aspects, particularly in comparison to contemporary interpretations of the planet. This consistency has been a key aspect of DC’s Absolute series; it provides enough familiarity for the character to be identifiable yet serves as a stepping stone to explore entirely fresh territories. Similarly, “Absolute Batman” alters Bruce Wayne’s wealth and introduces a living parent, which significantly changes this version of the character compared to the traditional Batman, but these elements don’t fundamentally alter the essence of the character. A similar approach is taken in “Absolute Superman,” as it reimagines many aspects of Superman’s Kryptonian origin while maintaining the central figure as a powerful champion for the powerless.
