Darkseid and Thanos have very different backgrounds and abilities. Darkseid is a New God, one of a race of incredibly powerful beings, and embodies pure evil. His power comes from the Omega Effect, a limitless source of destruction. Thanos, on the other hand, is originally from the planet Titan and is an Eternal – a superpowered human – but he was born looking like the Deviants, their monstrous cousins. Driven by his obsession with Lady Death, Thanos wants to eliminate half of all life in the universe to impress her. To achieve this, he collects incredibly powerful items, most famously the Infinity Gauntlet, which essentially makes him all-powerful.
