Okay, huge warning: if you haven’t seen episode 5 of Paradise season 2, “The Mailman,” stop reading now! Seriously, spoilers ahead. We’re officially past the halfway point of the season, and like last time, the story is really focusing on a fresh group of people thrown into the mix. There are still a ton of mysteries about what’s really happening in that bunker and how Link is going to shake things up, but this episode decided to zoom in on someone new: Gary, the guy Xavier met at the end of the last episode. It’s a total shift in focus, and I’m already intrigued!
The second season of Paradise started by showing how Annie was coping, but it quickly became apparent that the show isn’t solely focused on the central characters. While Gary’s past connected to Xavier’s quest to find his wife, his story wasn’t quite what it seemed. He shared that he and Teri had been friends ever since a devastating tsunami altered everything, but there was more to the tale than he let on.
As the new character shared his history with Xavier, including details about his group and their connection to Teri, a recent flashback in season 2 of Paradise revealed he wasn’t being entirely truthful. He was clearly hiding something significant, and this secret hints at a darker motive for his interest in Xavier’s wife as the story unfolds.
Gary Was A Lonely Survivor Who Prepared For The Apocalypse With His Friend Ennis
Before we explore what Gary wants, it’s helpful to know a bit about him and why he’s so important to the story of Paradise. Before the world changed, Gary was a solitary mailman, living a quiet, repetitive life. That changed when he met his close friend, Ennis, through an online video game.
Ennis, similar to Gary, was quite lonely, and this shared feeling brought them together. Their connection grew stronger as they talked about what might happen if the world ended. What started as simple speculation quickly evolved into serious planning, fueled by the conspiracy theories circulating at the time, including the surprisingly accurate ideas of Dr. Louge.
Gary started using his retirement money to buy supplies and found an old nuclear shelter in the basement of his post office, which he turned into a storage space for food. At the same time, Ennis reached out to people with useful skills – a nurse, a mechanic, and a gardener – and secretly persuaded them to join his group when society collapsed.
Even though they were doubtful, the group made it to the bunker, surprisingly arriving ahead of Gary and Ennis because of a route they took. Gary, remembering a lonely child he often saw on his deliveries, decided to bring him along, despite Ennis’s objections. While stopping to gather more supplies, Bean wandered off and unexpectedly found Xavier’s wife, Teri Collins.
Gary and Ennis hesitantly agreed to let Teri join them as they met the other new contestants from season 2 of Paradise. The group settled into a temporary living space – essentially turning the post office into their home – where they lived together, formed friendships and began romantic relationships. However, things started to unravel just before Xavier showed up.
Gary Killed Ennis To Prevent Teri From Going To Colorado
For several years, the group had lived peacefully together, but tensions began to surface, often centering around Ennis. He was focused on avoiding problems and conserving resources, which irritated the others, who felt he was stifling their ability to truly live. Ennis, however, didn’t appreciate their complaints, particularly those from Teri.
Ennis and Gary never really connected, and their strained relationship led to Ennis angrily breaking the radio Gary had made for Teri. He did apologize afterward, just before they went to investigate a passing train. Although they were armed, they encountered a group of people who forced them to drop their guns. Fortunately, the strangers weren’t looking for a fight.
Their leader explained they were actually a team searching for experts, and they were heading to Colorado – the very place Teri had been striving to reach for years. As they walked home, Ennis seemed truly happy for Teri, even though it meant he and Gary would be on their own again.
I was absolutely stunned when Gary shot his best friend – it seemed like he did it to stop Teri from leaving! Looking back at Season 2, Episode 4 of Paradise, Gary really played up how close he and Teri were, constantly talking about their strong friendship in “The Mailman.” But what he didn’t let on was that he was actually in love with her. It was a total shock to find that out later!
Despite accepting Teri’s rejection, he clearly still had strong feelings for her, demonstrated by his willingness to harm someone she cared about to prevent her from leaving. However, his actions may have been witnessed by Bean, who probably informed the others about what happened.
Since Gary was abandoned at the post office, it’s obvious the others left somehow. The retired mailman says they were taken by someone, but he’s known to lie, so that story is probably false.
Why Gary Isn’t Telling Xavier The Truth About His Wife
Despite Gary’s promises to help Xavier locate Teri, their partnership is shaky. Xavier wouldn’t trust Gary with his baby, Annie, but he did leave her with people he barely knew. When Gary pointed out this inconsistency, Xavier claimed it was because he still suspected the mailman was hiding something.
Gary finally admitted he had feelings for Teri, but said the most respectful thing he could do for their friendship was to help Xavier win her over. They shook hands after the conversation. However, the new person still hasn’t been completely honest with Gary, secretly keeping the fact that he killed Ennis hidden, which leaves Gary with even more unanswered questions.
Gary’s lies seem to go beyond just fear of losing Xavier’s trust or even his life. Xavier currently thinks his wife, Teri, has been kidnapped and is trapped, which is why he’s trying to force his way into the stronghold to rescue her.
However, it’s possible this new group is the same one from the train. This means Teri and her colleagues might have gone there after Gary admitted what happened. If Xavier doesn’t know this, he could start a fight that doesn’t need to happen, and people could get killed – including Teri’s friends.
If we understand Gary’s plan, he’s likely hoping Teri will be turned off by Xavier’s aggressive behavior, or perhaps he wants Xavier to be fatally injured while trying to protect his wife. Either way, Gary still seems to believe he and Teri could have a future together, and he thinks removing Xavier from the equation – by any means necessary – could make that happen.
Honestly, after that handshake, I’m still not sure if Xavier really trusts this guy. It felt a little too smooth, and our main character definitely seemed skeptical. That’s what’s so gripping about Paradise season 2 – all these hidden layers and unanswered questions. It’s just as good as the first season, and I have absolutely no idea how Xavier’s plan to save everyone is going to unfold. It’s a total nail-biter!
What Happened To Jackie & Crystal In Paradise Season 2, Episode 5
We know Ennis has passed away and Gary still works at the post office, but the whereabouts of the rest of the group are currently a mystery. However, we do know about Jackie and Crystal: Jackie was the group’s mechanic, and Crystal was the nurse. They became close while working together and eventually started dating.
Although Jackie and Crystal were appreciated members of the small community, they decided they needed their own place. They found a trading community that appealed to them and left on friendly terms. They invited Teri and Bean to visit before moving to Colorado, but haven’t been in touch with anyone since.

Everything shifted when Gary and Xavier arrived at the market. The women seemed pleased to see Gary, indicating they were unaware of any issues between him and Ennis. Most recently, Jackie and Crystal are both still alive and Xavier has entrusted them with caring for Annie’s baby while he tries to rescue Teri.
Crystal wants to make a difference in people’s lives, and caring for the baby, even for a short time, gives her a strong sense of purpose. Because Xavier vowed to reunite the baby with its father, we can expect to see Xavier and Crystal again after his dangerous mission is complete.
What Gary’s Betrayal Means For The Rest Of Paradise Season 2
Gary’s betrayal of Ennis has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only his own group but also helping Xavier achieve his goals. Ennis’s death likely drove Teri and the others away, and it’s possible Gary was involved with an enemy group, potentially even selling them information about his allies.
This situation distances Xavier from his wife even more. He’s trying to find her at a settlement he knows little about, except that it’s guarded and armed. While his Secret Service background suggests the settlement’s defenses aren’t very strong, that assumption might actually make things worse.
If the main character thinks these people are a threat, he’ll react immediately and might even use deadly force, all based on something Gary may have falsely claimed. While this new person isn’t as skilled in a fight as Xavier, his unpredictable emotions make him dangerous and prove he can’t be relied upon.
This raises the possibility that Teri isn’t actually inside the area Xavier is about to enter. However, Xavier is skilled at reading people and resolving conflicts peacefully, so he might be able to overcome any challenges he faces without a fight.
For now, the best way to locate his wife is to trust Gary, as his choices will drive the story of Paradise and lead to a fast-paced conclusion to the season.
