Nicktoons have played a huge role in making Nickelodeon so popular. Shows like Rugrats, Doug, The Angry Beavers, SpongeBob SquarePants, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Invader Zim are just a few examples of cartoons that have become beloved by fans. It’s no surprise that some of these shows have been revisited with remakes, sequels, or movies to expand their stories. However, one Nicktoon remake has reportedly been canceled, according to someone working on the series.
Animator Bob Camp recently revealed that the planned reboot of Ren & Stimpy has been canceled by Paramount, following a similar cancellation of a new Garfield series. The original Ren & Stimpy show on Nickelodeon was known for its edgy and often surprising content, leading many to question how it even got on TV. The remake was intended for Comedy Central, also owned by Paramount, and was first announced in 2020. Since then, updates about the new series have been scarce, although voice actor Billy West was reportedly involved. Given that the reboot was announced before Paramount merged with Skydance, it’s understandable why Ren and Stimpy won’t be returning to television.
Ren And Stimpy’s Controversial History
I still remember when Ren & Stimpy first hit Nickelodeon back in 1991! It was all about the wild, often gross, adventures of Ren, this anxious chihuahua, and Stimpy, a ridiculously happy cat. The original series ran for five seasons and 52 episodes, wrapping up in 1995, but thankfully, it came back in 2003! They revived the show as Ren & Stimpy’s “Adult Party Cartoon”, bringing back the characters we loved, but aimed at a much older audience – it was full of adult humor! Sadly, that version only lasted one season, and even then, only half the episodes actually aired. It’s funny, though, because they actually included an episode from the original series, “Man’s Best Friend,” in the Adult Party Cartoon – it really showed how edgy the original show could have been all along!
While classic Nicktoons like Ren & Stimpy aren’t currently in production, they still appear on Nickelodeon. Shows like SpongeBob SquarePants have become incredibly popular, running for many years with multiple movies and spin-offs. Nickelodeon has also added new animated series such as The Loud House, Wylde Park, and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness to keep its programming fresh.
Although some may not think of it as a traditional Nickelodeon cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender is making a comeback later this year with The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. This sequel proves that Nickelodeon is open to reviving its beloved shows, even years after they’ve ended.
