Paramount+ is bringing back some nostalgic favorites for anyone who grew up in the ‘90s. Over the last few weeks, the streaming service has added a lot of new movies to its library. Along with recent additions like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Face/Off, there’s a beloved ‘90s film that’s sure to please.
Starting September 1st, you can now watch Joe Dante’s action comedy film Small Soldiers on Paramount+. This unique movie boasts a great cast and lots of characters you’ll remember. The story revolves around a new line of action figures that are released before they’ve been properly checked. When a teen named Alan purchases these figures, he doesn’t realize they’re equipped with military technology, which throws him into a conflict. The “Commando Elite” begin attacking the “Gorgonites,” who are determined to fight back. The film is available to stream almost 30 years after its original release in 1998.
Why You Should Watch Small Soldiers
Small Soldiers didn’t initially perform exceptionally well in theaters and received a varied response from both critics and viewers when it first came out. However, it has since gained a dedicated following and is now considered a beloved cult film of the 1990s. Many people compare it to a mix of Gremlins and G.I. Joe, and it tells a really imaginative and fun story. While the movie is definitely silly and exaggerated, it successfully blends a lighthearted adventure with clever satire and insightful commentary on society, making it appealing to viewers of all ages. The consistently engaging action, culminating in a long and exciting final battle, keeps you hooked, and the combination of practical effects, computer-generated imagery, and live actors still looks impressive even today.
It’s been almost three decades since Small Soldiers first hit theaters, and it’s still a beloved film for many viewers. Beyond its clever commentary on consumerism and impressive visual effects, the movie is fondly remembered for its incredible voice acting talent. The Commando Elite were voiced by actors known from The Dirty Dozen, while the Gorgonites featured actors from This Is Spinal Tap. The cast also includes Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, and Devin Leary, along with Phil Hartman in one of his last performances before his death.
