Quentin Tarantino often sparks debate with his films and choices. He’s faced criticism for how he depicted Jackie Chan in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which led to the film being pulled from release in China due to racist stereotypes and unconfirmed stories. There was also a dangerous on-set incident during the filming of Kill Bill that resulted in Uma Thurman being hospitalized after Tarantino pushed her to drive a risky car at high speed, and his unexplained, harsh criticism of actor Paul Dano. Now, it appears Tarantino’s most recent work will soon be removed from Paramount+, the streaming service where it’s currently available.
Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, much like the director himself, has faced plenty of criticism. Some have focused on Tarantino’s brief on-screen appearance, while others have questioned the film’s frequent use of racial slurs – a choice that even prompted filmmaker Spike Lee to voice his concerns, stating Tarantino seemed overly fascinated with the word. However, despite – or perhaps because of – this controversy, Django Unchained has become a cult favorite, currently holding an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film follows Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave who teams up with German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to capture the dangerous Brittle brothers. Schultz frees Django, and together they hunt criminals across the South. Their pursuit eventually leads them to the plantation of Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), where they hope to find Django’s enslaved wife.
It’s Quintessential Tarantino
Critics generally agree that Django Unchained has fantastic highs, but is occasionally weighed down by unusual stylistic choices. Keith Garlington notes the film’s great moments are often surrounded by questionable decisions, while Toussaint Eggan of Polygon praises its thrilling action, dramatic tension, witty dialogue, and strong performances (despite Quentin Tarantino’s odd cameo), ranking it among his best work. Mikkelao from Letterboxed perhaps sums it up most succinctly, comparing the film’s tension to a dinner scene in Shrek 2.
Overall, Django Unchained is a classic Tarantino film – visually striking, filled with a talented cast, and definitely not for the faint of heart. The movie and the discussions it sparked are typical for the director, making it a good time to finally watch if you haven’t already. Even just the acting performances are worth the watch.
