Adam Sandler is a well-known comedian and actor, famous for his silly and relatable style in popular films like Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy. Despite his success, he’s also starred in some movies that didn’t do well with audiences or critics. Now, you can watch one of his less successful holiday films from the early 2000s on Paramount+.
Just a few years after his popular “Chanukah Song” on Saturday Night Live, Adam Sandler created a Hanukkah movie that didn’t quite hit the mark. Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights, now available on Paramount+, stars Sandler as Davey Stone, a troublemaker who’s forced to coach a kids’ basketball team to avoid going to jail. The film wasn’t a success, earning only $23 million worldwide and receiving poor reviews – a 13% score from critics and a 50% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Eight Crazy Nights Is a Holiday Flop That Is Still Worth a Watch
When Eight Crazy Nights came out in 2002, both critics and audiences overwhelmingly disliked it. Many called it a waste of time and a poorly made attempt at a Hanukkah movie. The main problem was its humor, which relied on crude and childish jokes – typical of Adam Sandler’s style, but not fitting for a holiday film. The combination of raunchy comedy and surprisingly serious moments felt jarring, and many viewers didn’t connect with the characters. The songs and humor also didn’t really align with traditional holiday spirit.
Despite its flaws, Eight Crazy Nights has become a surprising holiday favorite. Its story touches on important themes like dealing with loss, making amends, and finding a sense of community – and it’s one of the few animated films to celebrate Hanukkah, a holiday often overlooked in popular culture. The movie cleverly uses its wild, often immature humor to deliver these heartfelt messages, and its traditional hand-drawn animation style feels like a classic holiday special. Though it wasn’t a critical success, Eight Crazy Nights has gained a dedicated following and become a cherished, if unusual, Hanukkah tradition for many viewers.
