Wes Craven’s *Scream*, released in 1996, sparked a trend of similar slasher films that lasted for years. Just as *Friday the 13th* popularized camp slashers in the 1980s, *Scream* ushered in a new era of self-aware horror movies. While many of these copycat films weren’t very good, a few stood out. One of the more notable ones recently became available to stream on Paramount+, perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit.
The movie *Urban Legend*, which came out two years after *Scream*, is now available to stream on Paramount+ again, starting October 1st. While it’s very similar to *Scream*, it was still popular when it first came out.

Featuring Alicia Witt, Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson, and Tara Reid, *Urban Legend* is a mystery where anyone in the main cast could be the killer. Unlike *Scream*, which draws inspiration from horror movies, *Urban Legend* focuses on spooky stories from local legends, as the title suggests.
If you’re a big fan of *Scream* and have seen all six movies many times, *Urban Legend* could be worth checking out. It doesn’t quite reach the level of the *Scream* films – it lacks the cleverness and fast pace that made Wes Craven’s movies so great – but it might satisfy your craving for a similar slasher experience.
The movie *Urban Legend* isn’t very memorable and feels a bit bland. However, its sequel is a standout horror film, especially for those who enjoy the style of the late 90s and early 2000s.
The Urban Legend Sequel Is Unhinged
I really enjoyed the first *Urban Legend* – it did well enough to get a sequel, and honestly, that sequel, *Urban Legends: Final Cut*, is the one you need to check out. It tries to be like *Scream* with a bigger cast and a fun, self-aware vibe, constantly referencing horror movie tropes. But it gets *so* over-the-top and silly that it ends up being way more original and memorable than the first film. It’s a wild ride!
Urban Legends: Final Cut feels very different from the first Urban Legend film. It moves the scary action to a film school, where students making a movie about a killer start becoming victims themselves. While the basic idea is straightforward, it lets the film delve into the world of movies – similar to Scream – and creates opportunities for some inventive and over-the-top scenes on the movie sets.
Compared to *Urban Legend*, *Final Cut* is much more enjoyable, and it features a fantastic cast. Jennifer Morrison stars alongside Eva Mendes, Joey Lawrence, Anthony Anderson, and Anson Mount. Loretta Devine also returns from the first movie as the campus security guard, creating a link between the two films.
It’s a shame that, unlike the original *Urban Legend*, *Urban Legends: Final Cut* isn’t currently available on popular streaming platforms. Right now, the Roku Channel is the only place to watch it besides purchasing or renting the movie.
For a really fun and nostalgic Halloween experience, especially if you love 2000s horror, definitely check out *Urban Legends: Final Cut*.
