The 1980s are often called the peak of action movies. This decade delivered some truly unforgettable films that are still loved today, like *Die Hard*, *Lethal Weapon*, and *The Terminator*, which successfully mixed action with science fiction. It was also a time when action stars like Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger became famous. Sylvester Stallone was another major action hero of the era, and one of his best films is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
The original *First Blood*, starring Sylvester Stallone, became available on Paramount+ on October 1st. Released in 1982, the film marked a change for Stallone after his acclaimed role in *Rocky*. He plays John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who finds himself in conflict with a small-town sheriff when a simple detention turns into a full-scale manhunt. The movie, which also features Brian Dennehy, was a hit with both critics and audiences, launching the popular *Rambo* franchise. This franchise expanded to include four sequels, as well as an animated series, books, video games, and even a comic book. A new prequel, *John Rambo*, is currently in development with Noah Centineo in the lead role.
First Blood Is a Misunderstood Classic

Though known as a classic action movie from the 1980s, *First Blood* is often overlooked for its depth. Beyond the action and violence, the film is a surprisingly emotional story, offering a thoughtful look at a troubled character and the lasting effects of trauma on veterans. The movie portrays Stallone’s character as a veteran grappling with PTSD, realizing he’s the sole survivor of his military unit. When he travels to Washington, his struggles are met with hostility from the police, which brings back painful memories of his experiences and torture during the Vietnam War.
Rather than focusing on violence, the film offers a powerful look at how Vietnam veterans were treated when they returned home, and the lasting effects of combat. While many see Rambo as a hero, the film portrays him as a deeply damaged individual pushed to his limit. Seen this way, *First Blood* isn’t just an action movie; it’s a film that tackles serious issues of trauma, war, and the lack of support for soldiers – and it doesn’t celebrate the violence it depicts. Stallone’s nuanced portrayal of Rambo earned him critical acclaim, with some considering it one of his best performances.
First Blood is now streaming on Paramount+.
