Dwayne Johnson became a huge movie star after a successful career as a professional wrestler, appearing in many popular and critically acclaimed films. Before landing roles like Maui in Disney’s Moana and Luke Hobbs in The Fast and the Furious franchise, he starred in a little-known comedy from the 2010s that is now available to stream.
Starting December 1st, the 2010 family comedy Tooth Fairy, starring Dwayne Johnson, is now available on Paramount+. The film follows Derek Thompson, a tough hockey player known as the “Tooth Fairy” for his aggressive playing style. After telling his girlfriend’s daughter that the tooth fairy isn’t real, he’s magically transformed into one himself – complete with a tutu and wings – and must serve a week-long sentence collecting lost teeth.
Tooth Fairy Holds an Unfortunate Record for Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson has starred in many successful films, including the critically acclaimed Stuntman and the blockbuster Moana. However, Tooth Fairy wasn’t one of them. It’s actually considered his worst movie, receiving very negative reviews. Critics gave it a mere 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes – even lower than films like Baywatch, Doom, and Planet 51. While audiences liked it a bit more, its 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes still makes it one of his lowest-rated films with viewers.
While not a cinematic masterpiece, Tooth Fairy is still worth watching once. It’s a lighthearted and undemanding movie – predictable, yes, but enjoyable nonetheless. It delivers exactly what you’d expect from a family film: wholesome entertainment and positive messages. Dwayne Johnson’s charisma really carries the movie, and his humor, along with the sight of him in a tutu and wings, is genuinely funny. The film also deserves credit for its imaginative take on the world of fairies. Ultimately, it’s just charmingly silly fun – the kind of movie that’s so bad, it’s good.
Despite receiving positive reviews and being well-liked by many, the movie Tooth Fairy was also a financial success. It earned $112 million at the box office, more than double its $48 million production cost, which led to a sequel, Tooth Fairy 2, featuring Larry the Cable Guy. However, Tooth Fairy 2 wasn’t shown in theaters and was released directly on video instead.
What’s New on Paramount+?
As a movie buff, I was excited to see what Paramount+ added in December, and they really delivered! I noticed Tooth Fairy popped up on the 1st, which is perfect for a family night. They also added a ton of other great films – classics like the 1989 Batman, Django Unchained, and Forrest Gump, plus fun ones like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Pulp Fiction. If you’re looking for something for the whole family, they’ve got Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ella Enchanted, Ernest Saves Christmas, Paddington, Peanuts: Bon Voyage Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back), and Smallfoot too! It’s a really solid lineup.
