Paramount+ Streaming Cult Classic Monster Movie (And There’s a Remake on the Way)

Monster movies have captivated viewers since the very beginning of film. Starting with early examples like The Golem in the silent film era and the classic Universal Monsters that followed, continuing through Steven Spielberg’s huge hit Jaws, and extending to newer franchises like the Jurassic Park series and the Monsterverse, audiences keep coming back for more exciting monster adventures. Almost 30 years after a little-known but beloved creature feature was released with little attention, a new version is being made, and fans can now watch the original on Paramount+.

Robert Rodriguez’s sci-fi horror film The Faculty started streaming on Paramount+ on September 1st. The movie, which takes place at an Ohio high school where the teachers are infected by parasites from space, earned a strong $63.2 million at the box office. However, it wasn’t an immediate blockbuster and instead gained a dedicated cult following over time. The addition to Paramount+’s streaming service comes just a few months after Miramax revealed plans for a remake. Rodriguez will be back as a producer on the new film, and Drew Hancock of Companion will be writing the script.

Why You Should Watch The Faculty

Written by Scream writer Kevin Williamson, The Faculty is a horror film that also includes science fiction elements. The story follows a group of high school students who have to defend themselves against invaders who have taken control of their teachers. The film cleverly combines traditional horror with the alien invasion concept, all set in a high school, and is a nod to films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing. Williamson’s writing is full of his signature witty style, effectively balancing suspense and comedy, and features memorable lines delivered by a talented cast of rising stars, including Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, and Laura Harris.

Despite having a lot of potential, The Faculty didn’t achieve the same level of success as other popular teen horror movies from the ‘90s, like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. But over time, fans of monster movies have begun to recognize the quality of The Faculty. It’s now considered one of the best teen horror films from that decade and a remake is certainly justified.

Horror Movies Now on Paramount+

The Faculty is among a large selection of horror films now available on Paramount+, added at the beginning of September. Subscribers to Paramount+ can currently watch April Fool’s Day, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Kiss the Girls, the initial three Scary Movie installments, Sleepy Hollow, The Addams Family, The Crow, The Last Exorcism Part II, and a variety of other titles.

If you’re a fan of monster movies, Paramount+ has plenty to offer. On September 1st, they added several titles to their streaming service, including The Faculty, Area 51, Cloverfield, Dracula III: Legacy, The Monster Squad, and Vampire in Brooklyn.
