A movie’s ending can truly define it. Some films, like *The Sixth Sense*, *Psycho*, and *Hereditary*, are famous for their excellent conclusions, while others completely fall flat. A horror movie from the peak of the found footage trend is now available on Paramount+, and its ending is even more disappointing than many recall.
The horror movie *The Devil Inside*, known for its shocking ending and controversial marketing, is still generating discussion years after its 2012 release. Now streaming on Paramount+ since September 1st, the film-directed by William Brent Bell-follows a woman investigating the disturbing events surrounding her mother, who was accused of killing three people while seemingly possessed two decades earlier. It received a very low 6% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Devil Inside Controversy Explained
The film *The Devil Inside* was a huge financial success. Made with a budget of just $1 million, it earned over $100 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable movies of 2012. However, the film isn’t remembered for its achievements-like its effective scares and unsettling visuals-but rather for its incredibly abrupt and disappointing ending. Even now, it’s considered one of the worst and most debated movie endings in recent years.
We won’t give away the ending of *The Devil Inside*, because the reaction to it is something you really need to see for yourself. Just be warned: if you’re hoping for a neatly tied-up story, this isn’t it. After a particularly intense scene, the movie just abruptly cuts to black, leaving the story unfinished. To make matters worse, a final screen directed viewers to a website that no longer exists, which still frustrates horror fans. While controversial endings can sometimes build a movie’s cult following, that hasn’t happened with *The Devil Inside*. Instead of being appreciated for trying something different, it remains one of the most debated and disliked horror films ever made.
Other Horror Movies Now on Paramount+
If you’re not interested in watching *The Devil Inside*, or you’ve heard enough about its controversial ending to put you off, Paramount+ has plenty of other horror movies to choose from. They added a lot of scary films in September, including titles like *Cloverfield*, *Disturbia*, *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, *Kiss the Girls*, *The Faculty*, and *The Ring*. You can also stream eight *Friday the 13th* movies and three *Scary Movie* films.
