2026 is shaping up to be a great year for fighting game fans! We’re getting a new Mortal Kombat movie and, incredibly, the first live-action Street Fighter film in over three decades. While both movies will compete for attention at the box office (with a five-month gap between releases), early looks suggest they’re both promising. Recently, the Street Fighter movie had a chance to really build hype, and it almost succeeded.
With the release of the Street Fighter movie approaching, Paramount put out a promotional clip timed with a UFC fight featuring one of the film’s stars. This led some fans to believe a new trailer might appear during the event. However, that didn’t happen, and now everyone is waiting for the second trailer – likely a longer look at the movie’s story. Street Fighter’s Great Marketing Finally Misses a Beat

The cast of Street Fighter released a video on Friday to show their support for Alexander Volkanovski, their co-star, who is fighting for the Featherweight title in an upcoming UFC event. This cross-promotion is a good move, much like casting Volkanovski in the film originally. The previous UFC event (UFC 324) saw record-breaking streaming numbers – 4.96 million views for the main card – and Street Fighter is cleverly capitalizing on that momentum. Releasing a trailer would have been even more effective, as they’d have a built-in audience interested in both the movie and the fight, plus the benefit of Volkanovski’s popularity. However, fans will have to wait for a trailer for now.
The marketing for the Street Fighter movie has been impressive so far. The first trailer was surprisingly good, even for fans, and the characters look just like they do in the games, which is building excitement. Importantly, the film seems to be striking the right balance with its humor, something many adaptations get wrong. It’s a promising start, but it feels like they could be doing even more. Hopefully, the next trailer – potentially arriving soon with the Super Bowl approaching – will deliver on that potential.
The movie Street Fighter comes out in theaters worldwide on October 16, 2026. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
