The classic sci-fi movie “The Blob” is coming back with a fresh update in the 21st century. Unlike its original extraterrestrial origins, the new version will have the monster created in a lab instead. In an interview about the second season of Netflix’s “The Sandman,” producer David S. Goyer revealed this change, explaining that the updated “Blob” will be based on contemporary scientific advancements and concerns, like artificial intelligence, gene editing, and the ethical dilemmas they present.
For quite some time now, plans have been underway for another version of the movie “The Blob.” David Bruckner has signed on as both writer and director in 2024, with Goyer joining as producer too. According to Goyer, this new version of “The Blob” will tackle many contemporary issues and scientific advancements. However, it’s unclear whether the blob will be created using CGI, practical effects, or a mix of both; however, the 1998 “The Blob” offers an excellent example of a blob made using practical effects technology.
Chuck Russell, who directed the 1988 remake of “The Blob”, recently discussed his upcoming horror remake “The Ouija Board” with ComicBook. He also shared insights about the visual effects challenges he faced when bringing the Blob to life in the late ’80s. When asked about the differences in creating the Blob back then compared to today’s widespread use of CGI, Russell explained that they often returned home covered in real blob goo from the full-scale blob effect.
The original science fiction horror film titled “The Blob” debuted on Earth during the Cold War era in 1958, where a peaceful Pennsylvania community was terrorized by an extraterrestrial blob that came from a meteor. This movie was later re-imagined in 1988 by director Chuck Russell, with the alien creature landing in a California town instead. Unlike the original, Russell’s version of “The Blob” is much more intense and graphic, featuring the bloodthirsty blob consuming people, and an R-rating allowing for increased gore and violence.
In a similar vein to David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of The Fly, Russell’s The Blob initially underperformed at the box office in 1988 but eventually transcended its original performance, emerging as a cherished sci-fi horror cult classic. The iconic ’80s movie monster, a gelatinous purple creature known as the Blob, remains etched in our memories.
In the upcoming remake of The Blob, the creature’s origins appear to be more grounded in contemporary concerns, as per Goyer’s explanation. Unlike the original films that were produced during the era of space exploration and the fear of unknown life forms on other planets, the new version seems to tap into the anxiety about humanity potentially causing its own destruction. This gives the remake of The Blob a fresh take on a classic sci-fi horror monster from the genre.
You can currently rent Chuck Russell’s movie titled “The Blob” on various platforms such as Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Fandango Now, and Amazon Prime Video.
