Patrick Stewart’s Green Room Is Headed to Netflix

Patrick Stewart delivers a particularly unsettling performance in the upcoming horror-thriller, set to release in January 2026. Fans can also enjoy the 2015 indie horror film Green Room on Netflix starting New Year’s Day. The movie centers on a punk band in the Pacific Northwest who must fight for their lives after witnessing a murder and being targeted by a group of neo-Nazi skinheads at a remote location.

Jeremy Saulnier wrote and directed Green Room, and he later directed an episode of True Detective. The film brought together Patrick Stewart with fellow Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin. Sadly, Green Room was the last movie released during Yelchin’s life, as he passed away just a month after it came out in 2016.

Alongside Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart, Green Room features Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, and Callum Turner. While the movie was well-received by critics, it didn’t earn back its $5 million production cost during its first release in theaters.

Green Room has received a 90% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics agree that the film is a thrilling and smart genre piece, with strong performances from the cast.

Green Room is a Hidden Horror Gem

The film Green Room was well-received for creating a gripping, suspenseful mood and for realistically portraying the darker side of the punk scene, including the presence of white supremacist beliefs, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.

While Patrick Stewart is widely known for roles like Jean-Luc Picard or Professor X, his performance as Darcy Banker, the leader of the skinheads in Green Room, was equally dedicated. Director Jeremy Saulnier shared that Stewart thoroughly researched white supremacist groups for the part and even requested a small change to the film’s script to better embody the character.

Saulnier recounted a quiet curse word being uttered on set, calling it a highlight of the film. The actor had specifically requested to deliver the line, explaining to Saulnier, ‘I have to do this.’ Saulnier agreed, and when he heard it, he was immediately impressed, saying, ‘Oh my God, that’s my favorite.’

Despite joining the cast of Green Room only two weeks before filming started, Stewart quickly proved invaluable. Director Saulnier explained that the situation was becoming very stressful, and Stewart’s dedication and skill helped justify the financial investment in the film. Saulnier emphasized that he simply wanted a committed and talented actor, and Stewart delivered on both fronts.

To fully commit to his role, Stewart intentionally kept his distance from the actors portraying the band members, the Ain’t Rights. He wanted to make sure they felt intimidated by him on set. “It felt right that we weren’t close,” Stewart explained. “We all stayed focused on the dark, intense, and isolated atmosphere that the director, Jeremy, was building.”

Green Room will be available to stream via Netflix starting Jan. 1.
