Everyone knows Jason Statham can play a convincingly tough character, but many consider his funniest movie to be a departure from his usual action roles. Surprisingly, despite being released ten years ago and being a hit, it hasn’t gotten a sequel. The film brought Statham together with Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, and Bobby Cannavale, all directed by Paul Feig. Now, Feig is suggesting that a sequel to Spy may never happen, even though he does have an idea for one.
I recently chatted with Paul Feig, and the topic of a potential Spy sequel came up. He’s known for generally avoiding sequels, but given how much people loved the original action comedy, I had to ask if he’d reconsider. Sadly, it seems he’s still hesitant about revisiting that world, despite the constant requests from fans. It’s a bit disappointing, but he doesn’t seem to be changing his mind anytime soon.
I do have an idea for a Spy sequel. I previously avoided sequels, but I made ‘Another Simple Favor’ because it had been a while and we had a good story. I have a story idea for ‘Spy 2’, but I’m unsure if now is the right time to pursue it. I’m really enjoying working on new projects and I’m very happy with how ‘Spy’ turned out. Sometimes it’s best to leave a successful film as it is, rather than risk revisiting it and potentially diminishing its impact.
These comments follow up on statements Paul Feig made to MovieWeb in March. He explained that he’s hesitant to do sequels because he prefers working on fresh, new projects. He specifically highlighted his upcoming film, The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, which is scheduled for release in theaters on December 19, 2025.
‘Spy’ Was an Amazing Spoof of the Espionage Genre

Paul Feig is a well-known comedy director, and his film Spy really showcases his talent. Critics loved it, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and even though audiences scored it a bit lower at 78%, most people agree it’s a great movie. Here’s what the movie is about:
Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is a talented CIA analyst who’s spent her career working behind the scenes. She provides crucial support to field agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law) through technology and guidance, keeping him safe on missions. When Bradley is unexpectedly killed by arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), Susan is thrust into her first field operation – going undercover to track down Boyanov and bring her to justice.
Fans of Paul Feig have a new movie, The Housemaid, coming out soon. But Jason Statham fans will have to wait a bit longer for his next action film, Shelter, which is scheduled for January 20, 2026. Fortunately, there will be two Statham movies next year: Mutiny in August, and Shelter. Plus, 2027 promises even more, including The Beekeeper 2, the next Fast & Furious installment (reportedly the 11th), and a new film with Guy Ritchie called Viva La Madness.
