A new historical drama starring Paul Giamatti is arriving on Netflix and will wrap up a long-running story.
Paul Giamatti will be in the upcoming movie Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which is the third film based on the popular six-season British TV show. The previous movie came out in U.S. theaters last September and is now available to stream on Peacock and through digital retailers. It’s also becoming available on a major streaming platform.
Starting March 7th, U.S. viewers can stream Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale on Netflix, alongside the previous films from 2019 and 2022. The original Downton Abbey series, which ran from 2010 to 2015, is still available on Prime Video and BritBox. Many of the show’s actors appear in both the series and all three movies.
The final installment of the series, The Grand Finale, revisits the Crowley family as they prepare for Mary (Michelle Dockery) to take over the estate. However, her recent divorce creates a scandal that threatens their plans. The beloved cast, including Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, and many others, all reprise their roles.
The appearance of Paul Giamatti was a pleasant surprise. In the 2025 film, he plays Harold Levinson, the brother of Lady Grantham (played by Maggie McGovern). He originally played this role in a single episode of the TV series back in 2013. Having the two-time Oscar nominee return was a real boost for Downton Abbey, especially considering his most recent film role was in the critically acclaimed The Holdovers from 2023.
The final Downton Abbey film, The Grand Finale, received strong reviews with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, continuing the series’ tradition of critical success. While it earned $103.4 million in theaters worldwide, it was expected to perform even better with home viewers. It proved popular on iTunes, boosting its earnings and suggesting it will be a similar success when it becomes available on Netflix.
Even though the series has ended, Downton Abbey is a well-established, high-quality period drama, and The Grand Finale fits nicely with Paul Giamatti’s work in that genre. Still, Giamatti consistently appears in a wide range of films, so Downton Abbey likely isn’t one of his most prominent roles.
Considering his impressive filmography, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” isn’t even among his top thirteen highest-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes. However, fans of the actor, and those who enjoyed the film’s lavish sets and costumes, will be pleased to know it’s returning to Netflix soon.
