Paul McGann, who famously played the Eighth Doctor in the sci-fi series Doctor Who, recently addressed rumors about his potential return in 2026. He first appeared as the Doctor in a 1996 movie.
He reprised his role in the 50th anniversary special, “The Night of the Doctor” (2013), and again in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode, “The Power of the Doctor” (2022).
There’s been a lot of discussion about what’s next for Doctor Who, particularly since Disney will no longer be working with the BBC on the show after the upcoming series, The War Between the Land and the Sea.
Rumors started circulating online that Sylvester McCoy might be returning to Doctor Who after alleged photos of him with Billie Piper appeared. However, McCoy confirmed to The Gerry Anderson Podcast that these photos were actually created using artificial intelligence and aren’t real. He jokingly added, “If only!”
Once fans spotted photos of McGann and Piper together, speculation quickly spread, with many believing the rumors were true and a flurry of gossip beginning.
After podcast host Richard James suggested the rumors might be true and that actor Sylvester McCoy could be under a non-disclosure agreement, McCoy jokingly replied, “You’re making this worse. You’re part of the problem.”
I was just working with Billie Piper recently – within the last week or so, actually. It’s sparked a lot of rumors, with people hoping we’re collaborating on something, but it’s just a wishful thought right now.
Richard James suggested it’s possible, asking if the other person had signed a non-disclosure agreement. He speculated that they might be unable to share information, and that’s why they couldn’t confirm it, but that it could still be true.
McGann: “You’re making this thing worse. You’re part of the problem.”
Even without McGann saying the photo was created using AI, it would have been clear he and Piper weren’t actually filming the Doctor Who special together. Showrunner Russell T. Davies hadn’t finished writing the script as of November, making any on-set filming impossible.
When Peter McGann first played the Doctor, the show’s future was unclear, much like it is today. Doctor Who had stopped being made in 1986, and Sylvester McCoy was thought to be the last person to ever play the role.
The 1996 Doctor Who movie was made to bring the show back to television. It aired on Fox in the US, and Universal Studios helped produce it.
Because the movie didn’t do well with audiences in the U.S., Doctor Who wasn’t on television for many years. It finally returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the new Doctor.
Even after all this time, Doctor Who finds itself in a familiar spot. Disney partnered with the show as a producer, but the results were disappointing. Now that the deal with Disney has ended, the future of the series is once again unclear.
I was absolutely captivated by Ncuti Gatwa’s performance as the Fifteenth Doctor over the last couple of seasons, but sadly, he’s moved on from the show now. It’s a real loss, but I’ll always cherish his time as the Doctor!
To allow for a changing cast, the show uses a plot device where the Doctor transforms into a new form. Ncuti Gatwa’s time as the Doctor ended with a surprising twist: he transformed into Rose Tyler, a companion previously played by Billie Piper from the mid-2000s.
We don’t know exactly why the Doctor changed in this way, but the 2026 Christmas special will reveal all the details. Piper will appear in some capacity, but despite the rumors, Paul McGann won’t be returning to Doctor Who.
