Starbreeze Studios, the company behind the game Payday 3, has been openly dealing with challenges. To focus on improving Payday 3 with updates and dedicate more resources to it, they’re transferring development of the older game, Payday 2, to a different studio. Sidetrack Games will now be responsible for continuing support and updates for the PC version of Payday 2.
Sidetrack Games started as a group of players who created modifications for the Payday games, and they’ve also worked on RAID: World War 2. Starbreeze Studios, the creators of Payday, were impressed by Sidetrack’s dedication to supporting games after release for extended periods, and by their existing knowledge of the game engine used in Payday 2.
Starbreeze announced that the team formerly known as M.U.G. Team, now called Sidetrack, will be working on future updates. Sidetrack is a skilled group with a strong background in creating modifications for the Payday game. They proved their ability to consistently deliver high-quality content while working on RAID: World War II, and they have a thorough understanding of the Payday 2 game engine – they’ve already begun working on updates.
The first update after this transition is scheduled for October 23rd. It will mainly improve the stability and overall performance of Payday 2. We’ll share more specific details in the full patch notes when the update is released.
Following this decision, Starbreeze Studios announced it will concentrate fully on Payday 3, while still supporting Payday 2 and its players with ongoing updates and dedicated assistance.
So, a few months ago, Starbreeze finally got full control of publishing Payday 3 – they bought the rights from Plaion. Basically, they gave Embracer Group a bunch of their shares – over 147 million, worth about 33 million Swedish Krona – at a price of 0.2235 SEK per share. The big deal is, now that we fully own the publishing rights, we can really speed up development and get Payday 3 where it needs to be, without having to worry about anyone else’s plans.
Starbreeze will now fully own the publishing rights for Payday 3 after acquiring them from Plaion. This will allow them to speed up development of new content and explore more possibilities for the Payday series, according to board member Thomas Lindgren. Lindgren also expressed gratitude for Plaion’s support, highlighting their belief in Starbreeze and its growing relationships with key players in the gaming industry.
Starbreeze Studios recently announced they’re stopping work on the offline mode for Payday 3. Community Manager Elisabeth Elvestad and General Manager Jonas Skantz explained that creating this feature isn’t possible with their current resources.
During a recent livestream, the team addressed the offline mode feature. They acknowledged the team’s good intentions and efforts to implement it, but ultimately concluded it isn’t realistic for the game’s future development.
You can play Payday 3 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. To learn more, read our review about the game’s recent issues.
