In the second season of Peacemaker, a startling disclosure stirs up the DC Universe. The most recent episode digs up a forgotten piece of the past that questions long-standing assumptions about Superman’s Earthly origins. This revelation hints at an older alien influence, redefining what fans thought was established in the DCU’s chronology.
Peacemaker Season 2 confirms an alien came to Earth before Superman
In Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 4, it’s unveiled that the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, previously believed to be Auggie Smith’s invention, was originally owned by an extraterrestrial entity. During a hunting trip 35 years ago, Auggie unfortunately took the life of this alien and retained the device as his own.
This fact suggests that an extraterrestrial had already visited Earth before Superman (Kal-El) did. In James Gunn’s portrayal of Superman, Clark Kent is said to have arrived 30 years ago, implying that Auggie, another alien, existed five years earlier. The Quantum Unfolding Chamber possesses the ability to generate pocket realities linked to various dimensions, making it one of the mightiest artifacts within the DC Universe.
Incorporated within the episode are more references that strengthen its connection to the DC Universe and popular culture. Michael Rooker’s character, Red St. Wild, nicknames John Economos “Hagrid,” a nod to Harry Potter. Economos then responds by calling him “Captain Cultural Appropriation.” Additionally, another character is referred to as “Kung Fu Bulbasaur,” which marks the second time this season that Pokémon has been referenced.
In this installment, it becomes apparent that the DCU’s White Dragon differs from his comic book persona, as Peacemaker explains to Leota that his father didn’t excel academically beyond the 10th grade, implying he wasn’t as intellectually gifted as his comics equivalent. Additionally, Emilia Harcourt reappears and delivers a powerful, slow-motion punch that echoes a fight scene from one of James Gunn’s Superman productions.
Rick Flag Senior brings up his spinal injury from the animated Creature Commandos, caused by Clayface, and links it back to the Pokolistan series events. Leota draws a parallel between Peacemaker’s multiverse turmoil and The Twilight Zone. Chris refers to his reality as the “Dark Dimension,” and suggests Kupperburg Park as a gathering place, acknowledging DC Comics writer Paul Kupperberg.
