If you’re a fan of DCU with a penchant for conspiracy theories, you might find yourself commenting on the hidden layers in the latest tale unfolding within their interconnected universe. This story presents its character, who harbors an unhealthy dose of envy, with an irresistible new world where all his dreams come true. However, it’s not my place to interpret this.
One standout aspect of Peacemaker Season 2 is its depth, which is surprising given its initial appearance. Much like its first season, John Cena’s Peacemaker character differs significantly from Superman. After viewing the first 5 episodes, I am convinced that this season is even stronger than its predecessor.
In a completely different tone, I must clarify that my previous comments about Superman aren’t criticisms at all – I genuinely enjoyed the first DCU film. However, some concerns about it being somewhat overly complex did resonate with me. And watching Peacemaker Season 2 offers an intriguing glimpse into what a Superman story might have looked like if James Gunn had more time to develop it. It’s important to note that this isn’t the same James Gunn who worked on Superman, but the influence is undeniably there, despite him being officially director for only 3 out of the 8 episodes.
Peacemaker Is Definitely The Grown Up Side Of The DCU
The first season of “Peacemaker” sparked numerous discussions due to its bold creative approach, led by Gunn and his team, who ventured into topics considered too audacious for the Snyderverse or any other DC property, even Marvel. It didn’t shy away from criticizing DC superhero aristocracy (including scatological jibes), displayed nudity, drug use, profanity, and a shocking claim about Wookiee anatomy, yet it retained its emotional depth and sincerity. The second season of “Peacemaker” unapologetically continues this risqué content right from the premiere episode, using the multiverse to weave a surprisingly profound narrative.
This isn’t too unexpected, given that Gunn excels not only in portraying Superman’s divine might but also in breathing life into seemingly damaged characters beyond repair. If you were amazed by his transformation of Rocket Raccoon into a relatable character, wait until you see his handling of Cena’s redemption arc as Peacemaker. The first episode contains a scene reminiscent of ‘The Boys’, serving as a backdrop for Chris’ internal struggle. An unusual blend of graphic nudity and emotional storytelling surprisingly complement each other. It also includes another clever use of the ‘c-bomb’, and I can attest, as a Brit, that Harcourt is correct about its meaning.
In a somewhat controversial move, Gunn’s work incorporates explicit content that may prompt critics to label him as sensationalist. However, the narrative maintains a good equilibrium due to its substance. Despite some jokes that might not convey the story’s full depth, it remains captivating overall. Cena and Jennifer Holland shine in their roles, with Holland receiving more substantial storylines as Emilia Harcourt. Freddie Stroma delivers an impressive performance as the untrustworthy sidekick Vigilante, while Steve Agee once again impresses as John Economos. Unfortunately, this time around, Danielle Brooks’ character, Leota Adebayo, seems to have a less engaging story arc than anticipated.
In another twist, Cena’s portrayal maintains its endearing charm, striking a perfect balance between being amusingly zany without being overly joke-ridden or falling victim to the humor. Reflecting on his WWE career and the broader spectrum of “sports entertainment,” you appreciate the depth behind this multifaceted performance. As Peacemaker, he masterfully combines elements of a clown and charismatic protagonist; he’s both thought-provoking and understanding. Honestly, I’m genuinely excited to see him reappear. This all becomes much clearer when you revisit his past performances, where he captivated audiences with his rapping in front of thousands of devoted fans who made him a highly sought-after performer for quite some time.
Peacemaker’s Return Makes It 3 Out of 3 For James Gunn’s First DCU Releases
Of course, Peacemaker Season 2 isn’t just a continuation of a well-known series; it also had the challenge of blending James Gunn’s pre-DCU gems into the fresh narrative timeline (using whatever rules he chose to bend). This resulted in several characters from Superman making a comeback, notably Frank Grillo, who takes on a more significant role as the vengeful Rick Flag Sr. Although he delivers an impressive performance, it may be challenging to recognize him as the same character seen in Creature Commandos.
Among the fresh faces joining the cast are David Denman in an undisclosed character, Tim Meadows portraying a quirky ARGUS agent, and Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, Eagly’s adversary. They all fit in perfectly, a crucial aspect given that Gunn is determined to ensure this unconventional narrative will succeed. Interestingly, the reason Peacemaker remains part of the DC Universe despite the unexpected twists feels like a secret wink from Gunn, and if it means more Peacemaker, I’m all for it, even if it’s slightly less polished by 70%.
In simpler terms, the second season of “Peacemaker” shares the same emotional depth as “Superman.” It’s another impressive demonstration of world-building, and compared to the first season, it seems more authentically Gunn. I believe that many would agree with me when I say it surpasses the original. Notably, the music remains typically outstanding. Therefore, I consider it the third consecutive success for the DCU, suggesting that the franchise is in capable hands.
Score: 4 out of 5
